Here's a situation we ran into:
Large blue meeple is on the City Cathedral.
Small yellow meeple is on a cloister.
Yellow places last tile surrounding cloister.
Blue moves large blue meeple from City Cathedral to cloister, scoring 9 while yellow scores 0.
Can yellow be considered to have created a scoring opportunity for blue and therefore place a yellow meeple in the City?
Thanks for your thoughts on this.

What expansions are you playing - The Count? or Princess and Dragon? I don't have any expansions that would allow me to make these type of plays.

Sorry I didn't make that clear. We're playing with the Count (and I&C, but that's incidental).

Good question.

I suppose one might say that. When all is said and done, blue scores 9 points from a tile the yellow placed, albeit it's a stretch since he had to place it there himself. But still. Yellow lost the points so I'd probably allow a yellow meeple to be placed in Carcassonne, without too much argument, although I'd have to spend a few minutes thinking about it like I just did Smiley

(I've only used CoC a couple of times so far!)

No I dont think its a case of yellow causing a scoring opportunity for blue. Followers are placed in Carcassonne itself as a special move to allow a player to "steal" points from another without incurring a penalty (as in allowing the original player to place a pice in Carc). Have checked the rules again just to be sure and I think Im right on this.

Oh and good user name by the way  Wink

I keep reading the sequence of play, found here:

http://www.modernjive.com/carcassonne/carcassonne.htm

I'm thinking that if indeed correct, which it seems to be, printing and laminating this would be great for people to keep around as a reference while playing with many expansions. Especially as beginners or new to particular expansion.

I can't really find a rule that clearly states that yellow didn't create this scoring opportunity though, and at the end of the day, blue gets the point due to yellows tile placement, which is the criteria for moving a follower to the city of Carcassonne.

In step 6, scoring happens and meeples are moved *from* the city and to the scorable features.
In step 8, you're entitled to move meeples *to* Carcassonne.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't see what causes any special case, unless there's a wording or a rule I've missed Smiley

Oh and btw, check step 7, which is what I should've referred to in the Cathars discussion  Grin

Canada Steve, I admit it. I shamelessly ripped off your name. Perhaps I was suffering from lack of original thought, or perhaps I just wanted to get something down as quickly as possible before forgetting the scenario. Excuses, excuses!

Thanks for weighing in, CS and Hypnotoad.

CS you might be right, I've been wrong once or twice before if I recall correctly!

I just felt that most of the time, a rule in Carcassonne applies to every situation, unless an exception is clearly stated. It's easier to only state the exceptions, than to be forced to spell out any situation possible where a certain principle can be used.

Since I couldn't find an exception to the general rule clearly stated anywhere, I figured the rule applied here too and placing a meeple in CoC should be allowed.

That's how we've played anyway, but it'd be nice if mjharper or anyone else with a firm grasp of the rules could weigh in with their opinions Smiley

Well, the rules says:

Quote
Whenever a city, road or cloister is completed in which at least one player scores points, but the player placing the final tile does not, this player may deploy a follower from their supply to a city quarter of their choice.

Whenever is the key word I guess - so my interpretation is: yes Yellow can place a meeple in the city of Carcassonne.

But I can be wrong of course...
