A mini expansion is apparently planned for Spiel 2011 entitled 'The School'.

Sounds pretty straight-forward. I wonder how people will contribute and how many points they receive. It sounds like another expansion that scales poorly with multiple expansions.

Same. But probably HiG'll sell it separately later as well the same way they did with kornkreise. They must know how many completionist fans carcassonne has not to make something limited edition. Speculation on the tile count and rules anyone? To me it sounds like it might even be the 1st official 1 tile mini exp.

I don't think they sold Kornkreise seperately that I'm aware of.

They did sell Crop Circles directly through HiG part replacement service. That's how I got it.

I knew they were available as spare parts, but I thought maybe I missed something.  I wonder if the festival tiles are also available.

Nope. Already tried that and they flatly said no. They wanted people to buy the 10th Anniversary edition to get those. Luckily, I had a wedding and could justify giving the rest of the set away while keeping the 10 new tiles.

Count me in also if anyone here is going to get there hands on some!

Just to be sure, I'm in on this.  Do you have any idea what the price will be or how many tiles it actually contains?

The promo image suggests only one and the description seems to support that. The promo packs that Carcatronn is buying includes a cloth bag with a meeple printed on it and the Dominion promo cards. I'm pretty sure that the Dominion cards are German-language versions since they say "Carcassonne" rather than "Walled Village" on them. I guess we'll see how much they'll cost and how many tiles come with it, but in either case remember that most initial proceeds go to a charity.

I have bad news, must have misunderstood HiG, they are restricting me from selling this item to others due to conflicts with RGG. I am very sorry, everyone will either have to order through HiG's website after Essen or attend Essen this year to get this  :(

actually if they will sell you 'x' copies I highly doubt they have any authority to prevent resale, although I suppose they can threaten not to sell you future product.

If the majority of us are in the US, my sister-in-law is living in Germany this fall and I fully plan to exploit that fact to purchase as many copies of this as possible. I don't yet know how to go about that, but after Essen is over, I will email Hans I'm Glück and ask if the procedure is the same as usual (send in money, get expansion). If so, I will order probably ten, if possible, have them sent to my sister-in-law, and then have her bulk mail them to me or bring them back with her in December. In either case, I'll try to grab some spares that I can resell at cost to you guys. I may try my hand at selling a few online as well, but we shall see about that later.

Thanks for that image.  It looks like that expansion comes with a meeple.  Probably a neutral one.  Any ideas about mechanics?

Looks like a purple Phantom to me. Perhaps for the people that purchased the 10th Anniversary Edition in lieu of buying the Phantom expansion?

So when is this fair and man that looks cool...I hate being a completist...lol.  I know I'm gonna end up paying way to much for this second hand! LOL

It looks to me like the meeple might have something painted on the front of it.

I'm thinking it might just be the way the light is coming through it. Difficult to tell though.

HiG finally has a photo of this expansion on their site.  It is more than one tile.  Could it be the first official double-tile?  I'm not sure how it would work otherwise.  Check it out HERE (http://www.hans-im-glueck.de/carcassonne/mini-erweiterungen/die-schule/) and share your thoughts. 

The School looks like it may need to be put together, wonder what it's going to to!

It definitely appears to be the first double-tile. In addition, it looks like the Rainbow Over Ghana logo is actually stamped on the back, which is fine since the title appears to be a new start-tile as well. Luckily it just has roads coming out of it so it should be easy enough to fit in with the Wheel, City, and River source tiles.

I have a feeling that the rules will be something very simple, such as all roads coming out of the school are worth 2- or 3-points per segment (a là Inns & Cathedrals) with no value for incomplete. Sure it could be more complex, but since the premise is rewarding people for helping build the school, extra-point roads could easily accomplish that goal.

I don't know I just went and looked at the photo http://www.hans-im-glueck.de/typo3temp/pics/959f9d2ee8.jpg (http://www.hans-im-glueck.de/typo3temp/pics/959f9d2ee8.jpg) and it appears to be 2 tiles side by side to me, not a single tile if that is what you were referring to by double-tile.  If you look at the picture you can see a line and the rounded corners in the above url.

Either way it will be an expansion that I will be wanting to get my hands on.  I wonder if its going to be something easily obtainable in the states.

That's good to know. I like the look of this one. But I still haven't got WoF (too expensive), celebration (ditto), phantom (meh), crop circles, plague or tunnels (hoping the last three will be released in english/ down under), so the school will probably just go onto the list...

Finally a good description with rules.  It is NOT a double tile, thought that might have been cool.  Rules posted on the Geek (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/713681/just-got-it-at-essen-descrules) by someone who got it at Essen.  I'm really looking forward to this one.

Here is the rules text:
1. It's a two-tile expansion. At the start of the game both tiles are placed next to starting tile (to the left or to the right).
2. The tiles depict school (surprise, surpise) with 6 roads leading to it.
3. The special meeple (comes with expansion, in fact, the usual transparent meeple from the 10-years edition) is placed to the school. He is the teacher.
4. When a player finishes a road leading to school, he takes the teacher.
5. After that, when a feature is scored next time (by anyone), the player with the teacher gains the same amount of points and sends the theacher back to school. He gains these bonus points even if it was he who scored (i.e., in this case he gains double points).
6. When all 6 roades leading to school are completed, the players cannot take the teacher any more.
7. The art is nice. I'm sorry I forgot to take my camera with me so I can't share.

I find it interesting that the tile pictured here is not the real thing.  I guess they needed something to show off and the tiles weren't finished yet.  I wonder if the meeple is accurate?

oh that sounds like an awesome mini expansion!  I hope the transulcent meeple is a different color. But if not, there are extra meeple stickers on the sticker sheet could totally use one for the teacher!  Can't wait to get this....


Unfortunately HiG has prohibited me from selling this item due to conflicts with RGG, sorry CK.  Lets hope RGG will get this on board so I an start selling it. I think HiG said they will sell after Essen through their site though

Sounds interesting - but I wonder about it relying on just the six roads. Seems like those would get completed pretty quick. Also, seems like it would be fairly easy to defend by completing say a two point road anywhere just so the guy only gets two points out of the teacher, for example.

To be clear, do you think if someone is holding the teacher and another player completes a school road that he steals the teacher after the player scores his teacher points? Or does the teacher have to go back to the school after being scored.

I just assumed the road would be lost if it was completed while the teacher was out, but it's possible it could count as a completed feature and the person holding the teacher could get the score, move it back to the school, and then have it move immediately to the next person.  I hadn't considered stealing it.  I would think that unlikely.

there are two examples in the rules:

Yellow has the teacher. Green completes a city with 12 points. Yellow gets 12 points too and the teacher goes back to school.

Red has the teacher. Blue completes a "school-street" with 5 points. Both Red and Blue get 5 Points, the teacher goes back to school, but Blue gets him immediately.

That's what I expected.  Glad I called that right.  :)

It sounds like the teacher scoring occurs on the very next feature to be scored, in which case I plan to complete the smallest feature possible when somebody else gets the teacher. ;D

Yes, exactly my point. Only the road you choose is a school road so you can get the teacher right away with the same play. But then the next guy does the same thing and before you know it the school roads are closed fairly quickly. At the start of the game there are not many other tiles to play on.

It's a novel expansion and I understand the cause behind it - but it is fairly thin. (IMHO)

New photos including rules scans (in German) on the Geek.  Check it out HERE (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgameexpansion/104634/carcassonne-die-schule).  Unfortunately, the teacher meeple appears to not be unique.  It is simply one of the translucent meeples inserted randomly from what I understand.  I suppose would be simple to paint the unique figure it deserves.

I don't mind the simplicity of the expansion.  With the mulititude that there are, simple is best at this point and I think it might prove harder than you think to close the roads.  It all depends on the draw.

Probably wrong spot to post this but since there has been talk of rules for "The School" I figured I would role with it.  So do the Eastern, Southeastern and Southern roads from the school score two points for each road since there is a lake on them?  My guess this falls in the same realm as the Pig Herd from GQ, but it was a pig herd and that is a big lake on the roads around that school.  IMHO ;)

I would agree. The rules call it an Inn on the Lake. So just any body of water will not do.

Sorry for the oversight :o  I did forget about the Inn aspect as I am use to just looking for the lake on the tile. 

Does this school have a dormatory(ies)? If so that is akin to an inn. ;)

Anyone have maybe rules for school written in english? I seen german rules on BGG, but german is not my strong side.
