Memoir 44

Anyone got this game?

I am about to buy it and wondered; if I also buy the campaign book do I need expansion sets (Pacific, Eastern Front, etc) to use it, or can I use it with just the basic game?

Hi yep got this and wouldnt suggest buying it.

Have the expansion campaign book and all the sets and it doesnt play that well Im afraid. I would suggest BattleLore if you are going to go with a Days of wonder Game.

Yes you need the expansions for the campaign book, but not for all of it, you can play with basic stuff for the european campaigns.

The reason I dont like this that much is the game system doesnt allow for proper fire and effect. For example you attack with your infantry against another infantry unit with one empty hex between you and the defender does not get a chance to retaliate !! In real life the defender would be firing back and casualties would be on both sides. Also when your unit is down to one figure you are still firing at full dice allowance, no reduction ??

Anyway your choice but as I say BattleLore plays better for my money.

I want something fairly simple that my 10 year old can play with me and we both like the WW2 and D-Day scenarios.

Just checked out BattleLore, but not really a fanatasy fan.

If anyone has suggestions for a WW2 game with miniature figures and a D-Day scenario, that can be played by a 10 year old please let me know.  I am not a real wargame geek, so I am not too phased if the rules are not 100% authentic.  Simplicity is the key for us (were not very bright,......well i'm not!)

What about Axis and Allies D-Day thats quite an easy game to get along with and gives you plenty of troops etc. Or you could start the Axis and Allies miniatures game, where you can both collect the minis and fight with them, again its quite a simple game mechanics and is fun to play with lots of expansions and the minis are cheap on ebay. I have a starter game set for sale if you are interested, but this aint a sales pitch.

I actually think Memoir '44 would be a good fit. I have Memoir '44 and a few expansions and the game has quite a fan following. I have not played it much as I often get way more than two players for our game sessions. I think it fits your requirements reasonably well.

Had a good look at Axis and Allies last night.
I found the rules hard to follow and there are a lot of rounds.  Not sure if my 10 year old with his very short attention span would like it much?
In its defence it does say its for 12+, whereas Memoir 44 is for 10+

Well, after much reading of reviews and looking at other games suggested on here I finally decded to go with Memoir 44 after all.
I know its supposed to be slightly simple compared to most wargames, but that's what I was after.  A wargame that I can learn in 10 minutes and play for fun, not reality.
I read some rules for some of the other games available and got totally lost.

Ordered it last night from IGUK, so I should have it by the end of the week.

Will let you know how we get on.

Well, after much reading of reviews and looking at other games suggested on here I finally decded to go with Memoir 44 after all.
Ordered it last night from IGUK, so I should have it by the end of the week.

Arrived first thing this morning just one day after ordering.  Usual great prices and delivery from IGUK.  The box and contents look really well made and exciting, super quality.  Can't really do much more at the moment other than look at it, as I am supposed to be working    Hope to be playing our first game tonight.

Hope you and your son have a great time playing it. One tip is to have the internet to hand with the Days of Wonder FAQ as some of the cards can be a bit lacking on info.

Well we have played a few games of this now and realy like it.  In fact my son and I are already planning which expansion we will get first.

Steve; I see what you mean about the rules being simplistic compared to mainstream wargames, but to be honest we prefer it that way.  Quick and simple to pick up.  The tactics cards make for some nice surprises.  It is a board game about war, rather than a war game in the true sense of it; if you see what I mean.

I particularly like the hundreds (if not thousands) of scenarios that can be easily downloaded, giving almost unlimited new games to play.

Thanks for the tip on the FAQ, solved a couple of dilemmas.

Well it's been about 3 months since I bought the base game of Memoir 44.

Totally hooked and just like Carcassonne, I had to have all the expansions.

Now the proud owner of the Campaign bag, Terrain Pack, Air Pack, all 3 Army Packs, Winter/Desert board, and Campaign Book.

Have also downloaded the Scenario Editor and my 10 year old has spent ages researching and making his own scenarios.

Very pleased, would reccomend it to any board game enthusiast who likes WWII.

Next project is to build a Dice Tower.
