OMG...a "10"...LOL!

Don't get take me wrong -- I LOVE HeroScape and have been a long time member of HeroScapeRs~dot~Com, driving over a hundred miles to participate in the nearest tournaments, and giving away HS Master Sets to every boy in my extended family, BUT a *TEN* -- surely you jest.  Well as they say at yardsales, "One man's/woman's trash is another person's treasure."

I've got multiples of all the HS stuff (except for Acqilla's Alliance), I think I'm up to maybe ten Master Sets (6 or 7 RotV and 3 SotM).  The terrain tiles are totally AWESOME, for adding that missing third dimension to ANY war gaming map -- you can even play "RISK" on these tiles.  And for me, building / acquiring customized home-made terrain enhancements has become a hobby unto itself, akin to Model Rail-Roading.  BUT... the mechanics are over simplified, as Hasbro intended to appeal to a much younger audience than traditional grognards ...AND chasing after the latest non-collectible (haha) characters is just another sink-hole for my discretionary fund$.  I can do without the bizarre storyline of Well Springs and Angelic Beings with mystical powers and who knows what plethora of new figures WotC will be releasing in the near future with Waves #9 - #99.

Yes I do play HS with my grandsons and enjoy the quality time we spend together, but I have an ulterior motive and that is to use HS as the introduction to real War Games and steer them away from Hotwheels and Lego's.  With HS I can simulate for them skirmish level meeting engagements between 500 point armies (aprx. 20 figures) of Romans vs. Vikings, ...or Romans vs. MacDirks, ...or Vikings vs. MacDirks, ...or Romans / Vikings / MacDirks vs. Samurai, etc. ...or 4th Mass Line Minutemen vs. 10th Regiment of Foot Redcoats, etc. (the number of scenarios are limitless, especially with such a dymanic map board underlying the whole thing) -- and then teach them something about strategies, tactics, lines of sight, rules of engagement, standard operational procedures, etc.  I guess I'm too much of a purist to appreciate the whole Sci-Fi fantasy combination of agents, knights, elves, robots, dragons, and insects intermingled on the same team.  Yes, HeroScape is a GREAT Game, I just wouldn't have given it a ten...hmmm, nine and a half maybe, but not a ten!

Thanks for the response Johngee.

I know what you mean about the subjectivity of game ratings. HeroScape has really resonated with our group. We have ALOT of HeroScape. Smiley

It was the game that congealed our gaming group. It turned a rag tag bunch of friends that would get together every few months into a dedicated collection of gaming friends that would gather weekly. Mind you, what we play can hardly be called HeroScape anymore. ha ha ha

With so much terrain, so many units, and the addition of a number of house rules, our hybrid is HeroScape-esque at best. Here is my map thread on HeroScapers. Have a look:
http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=2532

Anyways, thanks once again for yoru comments. "Life is short; play games".

Wow, those maps must have cost millions to get together and days to put together.  I'm impressed at what has been done!  Now I really wish I can go to the next Bixcon!

I will eventually buy HeroScape. But I think I will start with buying just one copy of each master set Wink

Thanks for the response Johngee.
And ditto ... thank you for the kind feedback, I love to banter and haven't been back to this site in way too long.

I know what you mean about the subjectivity of game ratings.
I was only kidding ... HeroScape is GREAT ... but doesn't the "TEN" rating on BGG require you to want to play that game and ONLY that game 24 - 7?  That wouldn't leave you much time to play anything else, like ... Carcassonne, or even to talk about any other games on this web site.  hehehe

Lucky you!  I succeeded in getting my friends (probably a lot older than yours) away from Gin Rummy, Monopoly, and Scrabble -- to try new things like Carcassonne (with ALL the expansions), Poison, Deadman's Chest, Tsuro, Ticket To Ride, and lately Shadows Over Camelot, but I'm the only one BUYING the new games and promoting them and it's getting old since my funds are low.  I've only been playing HeroScape with my grandsons (ages 7 & 9), but recently met some new friends who like to alternate HeroScape with HeroClix and Star Wars Mini's.  Also I joined a board gaming club which seems addicted to never ending cycle of trying every new game as soon as it it comes out, when I still prefer some of the old classics, like Carcassonne and even Risk.  Both are 45 minutes away and with the price of gas and GSP Trolls, I glad when I can make it there once a month.

I will check out those photo's when I get a chance.  Regarding House Rules and Hybrids ~LOL ~ that's what I LOVE BEST about HS, the dynamic nature of the mechanics being adaptable to just about *ANY* figure or story line.  An HS friend in PA, PeterParkerH, told me he created a "My-Littlest-Petshop-Scape" set of characters for his daughter to use on the same Battlefields of Valhalla terrain boards.  And as an experiment, I just finished gluing Dora, Diego, Boots, and Backpack figures (from a Candyland game) onto HS bases and created Stat' Cards for each one.  Thus Dora-Scape is born.  Hasbro is really dropping the ball on this one by not realizing the full potential if it was marketed properly.  I suspect their Legal Dept is tied up in knots over copyright infringements issues.

"Life is short; play games".
Didn't Shakespeare say, all the world's a play and we merely players upon it's stage (paraphrased)?  So to your tag line I would reply: "Life is a game; let's roll the dice and see what happens."

&OBTW:  When and where is the next Bix-Con?

P.S.  Sorry Steve, I did not mean to hijack your tread about "War Games in general" with a diatribe about only one (HS) in particular.  I'll come back soon with a list of the war games that I have played, own, and want to play.  ~JG~

I have two games I rated as Ten. HeroScape and Poker. Smiley To me, a ten is a game that is highly enjoyable, I will always play it, not turn down a fgame, and I do not see my enjoyment diminishing over time.

I am the main game purchaser / collector in our group. I am ok with that as it is my number 1 hobby. I do not have any other expensive hobbies so I put more money into this than most. We have some tried and true standby games, and we are always introducing a new game every few weeks. Our group has grown consdierably in size this past year. I run a discussion forum for family and friends and there are more and more people hosting game nights now so it is rewarding to see the hobby grow and flourish. Carcassone is still a favourite for my wife and I to play though. Smiley

Wow. Very creative. You have done more unit customization than I have. I have a bunch of figures ready to re-base to make HS Customs; I just need to get at it. It is a very extensible game *system*.

BixCon was a small humble gathering of friends that grew into a full blown three-day convention.

Yes Steve, I too am sorry for the Hijack. Here is some wargaming related information:

Concerning war games, I used to play a lot of Supremacy. It has some interesting elements that our group enjoyed when I live in Halifax. I have Memoir '44 and Tide of Iron and both have hit the table only a couple of times in the last year and a half. I may decide to part with them. I bought two more games that have not hit the table that I would REALLY like to play. Twilight Struggle and Hammer Of The Scots. I am hoping to play both of those this year.

Yup...my bad...you're right...duh!  I meant to post that list of War Games on the War Games Thread and clicked on the wrong topic.  I'll cut and paste it where it belongs.  Thanks.
