Natasha & I like to keep our tiles separate since we like to play different expansions each time. Which means after the game during clean-up, we have to pluck out the expansion tiles, and sometimes one or two tiles hide in the main Carc pile, or sometimes we forget which tile goes with which expansion. Matt, you already have a tile distribution reference is grouped by tile type as a separate pdf, and also individual expansion FAQs have the tile distribution reference at the end. What about making a separate pdf, a tile distribution grouped just by expansion? It would make it easier to flip a few pages than all of the individual FAQs to find one tile. Just a thought!

I've marked mine with a pen. A very small B for Traders & Builders, a small 11 for the GQ Mini expansion etc in one of the corners - it's almost invisible if you don't know what to search for. Okay, the resell value probably dropped - but I'm not planning on selling The Tower and Princess & Dragon don't need markings though.

I've done the same, marking the tiles from the expansions with one letter. Using the tile bag there is no worry about seeing the marks, even if eventually the corners might wear.

I haven't really considered marking tiles yet. I only have the basic game (including River) plus I&C. At the moment we have just put all the tiles together in the original box - except that we grab out the river tiles when we pack up a game and put a rubber band around them.
Given that I&C doesn't really add a huge amount of compexity to the game I don't expect that we would pull these tiles out of the mix in any case, even when teaching the game to a newbie. However, Traders and Builders is a different story - once we get it I may well mark or separate these so we can pull it out if need be.
My view would be that if introducing the game to first time players T&B is not such a good idea - it adds quite a bit of complexity and there might be a tendency for them to become obsessed with city completions and the builder that they miss learning some of the foundational strategy that you pick up in your first few games with basic Carc. Just my opinion.
The backs of our sets - Basic, and I&C are noticeably different shades of grey anyway - I could easily split them by just comparing the backs.

Different shades of gray? hmmm ours are the same! The only reason we haven't written anything on the back yet is that we sometimes like to use the tower dispenser, and you can see the backs while picking a tile.

Mine are the same shade as well.. I did the markings on the .. um, not gray side (!), but it's small and as I said, you need to know what to look for. But it's effective, we have yet to miss a single tile

We just bung everthing in the bag and be done with it. But on the other hand, we haven't played with newbies very often. @Gantry: the single PDF is a good idea. I have to rotate several of the images to make them conform to the system I used to organise them, but them I'll see about making a collection. (Working on the Completely Annotated Rules, so this will get done, but it might be a little while yet…) :

I just thought - the usual way of doing Tile Distribution lists is to make a PDF. But maybe it would be more useful to make an actual web-page, since then the images could form a resource which could be used by everyone at CC. Say you want three or four tile to help make a point on a thread, then all the images you need would be available on the TD lists…

Thinking about it, that would take a lot of work, since some tiles would need 4 rotations if they were going to be used online. Maybe a download kit would be a good idea instead?

Just uploaded a new version of the Consolidated Tile Reference to the Downloads area - now including distribution lists for the basic game and all expansions. I thought it was better to make a single comprehensive file (19 pages) - if you only need the expansion lists, they're at the end of the document.
