2008-04-04, i din't read ALL the posts, i do NOT have time but i'm asking anyway!!

when we count the FARMERS points, do we use 3 points per city(in some Carcassonne instructions) or 4 points(in some others instructions)  +1 for the "piggy" / pig herd.

Same way for the barns, do we count at the end of the game 4 points or something else(depending of the version of the edition)

thx,

Deatheux

It depends on which edition of the rules one is using.

There are two versions of the rules for farm scoring (1st edition and 3rd edition). A good, but quite long, entry about the differences between these editions of the rules can be found here: http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/forum/index.php?topic=190.msg1411#msg1411

4 points is 1st edition scoring (RGG)
3 points is 3rd edition scoring (HiG)

Some people use 4 points with 3rd edition scoring. I'm guilty of this myself. By some happy accident, my friend who taught me to play Carc misunderstood the rules and was unknowingly playing this way. I think people who started with RGG rules are just used to the four points. At the same time, it's fairly well-recognized that farms are "too powerful", which is probably why HiG reduced the number of points by one. Based on my own experience, 3 points is probably better balanced.

I read somewhere that 3rd edition scoring is used at official tournaments in Germany. I would suspect that other parts of Europe follow suit, but I have no idea what rules would be used in North America. I have no knowledge of any Carc tournaments around here. I am curious to know if there are international tournaments? If there are, I would expect they use 3rd edition. I feel that for reasons of being standardized, 3rd edition is the way to go. I switched to using 3rd edition rules in the game that I have run, though it has been a long time since I have had an opportunity to play.

this really a good argue! Barns are to blame!!

But if Germany tornament uses the 3 pts/farms... may we use it either!

Well, they might well be to 'blame', but i'm glad then that they are. The Barn gives RGG the opportunity and rationale to discard the 1st edition rules in favour of the HiG 3rd edition rules!

As you can probably tell, I am firmly in the 3rd edition camp!!!

Someone used to have a table of this up somewhere... has it been incorporated into the new CAR?

There was a table in version 4.0 of the CAR that lists all the points for each type of scoring.

Majority of farmers: 3 points / completed city
with pig: +1 point / completed city
with pig-herd tile: +1 point / completed city
with Cathar tile: affected city x2 points

Majority of farmers on connecting to farm with a barn: 1 point / completed city
with pig: +1 point / completed city
with pig-herd tile: +1 point / completed city
with Cathar tile: affected city x2 points

Barn: 4 points / completed city
with Cathar tile: affected city x2 points

It is not possible to combine a pig with a barn, but what about the pig-herd tile?

I find it interesting to note that under HiG rules, the barn is worth one more point per city than ordinary farmers, while under RGG rules they have the same value, so there is slightly less incentive to use barns.

@Scott: in the rules, we can see that the pig herd works like the lovely piggy, and worth bonus only to farmers. Hope that, clarify.

The rule for the pig-herd tile was written before barns existed. I was just curious if it could/should give a bonus to barns as well, but I would not play it that way without an official ruling. Farms already score enough points as it is.

The pig-herd does not give a bonus to barns.

Quote
Question: Does the pig-herd tile still score an extra point (barn = 4 points, barn+pig-herd = 5 points per city)?
Answer: The pig-herd tile only counts in connection with farmers, not the barn.
