I asume that the blocked spammers will create a new account to continue their spammer.
I wonder if registrations can be blocked on the forum and that they have to be approved by an admin. Maybe it's also possible to block registrations from users using e-mail addresses from services like gmail or hotmail.
The forum from Lookout-Games did this for a while because of spammers. Maybe they're still doing it.

Then you'd lock out at least one mod because I use Yahoo.  Anyway, we're working on it, trying to keep up as best we can.  We've got a system for dealing with this, but the admins have been largely unavailable lately, so they haven't been able to ban them.  We've got a new admin now though so hopefully, we'll take care of this guy soon.  There are also new steps in the registration process that will help, but this guy squeaked in before.  Hang in there.

What I meant was blocking new registrations from users using an open e-mail service. Not already registered users.

That is no good. I would just ban this person and his ip for 90 days. A possibility for users to dermine spam would be great. I wrote such system, but for another forum engine and it worked very well so far (client don't complain).

I do not know why that account has not been banned yet. It is easy enough to prevent spam. I run two separate SMF websites; there are tools and add-ons that can be installed.  I think something should be done soon on this issue or we will lose members. I know I am discouraged coming to the site multiple times this week to see so much spam. Sad

The admins are the only ones that can ban anyone right now and they are all out of town or unavailable at present.  It should be fixed soon.

Most of the spam was coming from one particular user, and he is now definitely banned. I can see him trying to access the forum right now and he's not getting in.

FYI...

This is a very good feature / Add-on to install for SMF boards. I have it installed on both of the boards I run:

Thanks for the recommendation; this is my first experience running an SMF-based forum. I've installed and configured that add-on so hopefully we'll see less spammers around here.

The only problem with the approval system is that 99% of people use generic meaningless email addresses & names etc so it is very hard to recognize them. The other option is denying .ru & .cn domains entirely but then you alienate legitimate people from those countries. Spam is an ongoing battle...

The anti-spam add-on can check email address & IP address against a database of know spammers. Very effective. That and the question on registration feature.

This is what I used on an SMF based forum and it was very effective at keeping spam at bay.
