Carcassonne: Travel Edition has finally showed up on my doorstep and my first reaction was "meh". As in, not very impressed. Basically it's just a miniaturized version of the Base Game without any travel amenties. No tray for placing tiles in during play and no way to easily distribute tiles and keep score. Obviously a better version would have been magnetic or included some kind of Scrabble like board with a score track around the outside. Of course this wouldn't adequately represent the sprawling nature of carcassonne but it would be great for moving vehicles like trains, cars and planes or for places where a table wasn't readily available.

The only thing different from the original is the storage bag. Instead of a sturdy little box to keep everything in you're given a tan bag with a score track on it. In other words, whatever surface you choose to play on has to be large enough to accomadate the tiles and the score track and the playing area. Not exactly travel friendly. Overall I'm dissapointed with the execution of this "Travel Edition" and can only reccomend it as a way to aquire the tiny meeples you'd need to play my "Apprentice" house rules.

Also worth noting is that the bag is a little larger and a bit sturdier than the old blue one so if you like to draw tiles from a bag it may be a welcome addition as well.

Now I'm off to try to find a use for the mini tiles.

Have to say that when I saw the description for the game I felt it was a waste of time. It just sounds like mini Carcassonne, which does not mean it's suitable for travel..... A bit of a money maker and nothing else.

If they at least released all the expansions we could play on much smaller tables... :P

Or the same sized tables with twice as many tiles ;-)

That's a bit steep - amazon.de is currently selling it for €11.89, and I can pick it up in town for €13…
