I have recently started using "expansion selector cards" to add some randomness to games as far as which expansions are used.  I'm curious how you guys handle tile selection when you're only using part of an expansion.

For example, you decide on playing with Princess and the Pig.  Do you mix in all of the Dragon & Fairy tiles or just the 6-tile Princess subset?  For the Pig do you mix in the 24 Traders & Builders tiles or no tiles since the Pig is independant from the Traders & Builders tiles?

I'm aware that you can play either way but I'm wondering what you guys are doing.

We never sort our tiles so they are all together. We only decide how many tiles we are using not which ones.

There are certain expansion tiles that we keep in our base set all the time. The Inns tiles from Inns and Cathedrals - because we like to balance the value of the roads against cities. And the magic portal tiles from Princess and Dragon - because we like this mechanic - to be able to re-claim abandoned features.

If we decide to use the Cathedrals or the balance of the P & D expansion then we add them in.

I like the idea of a random draw to determine what expansions to play. I'll probably try that - it would add an element that perhaps is missing - currently as a group we all seem to have our favorites so those seem to be the ones that get included repeatedly. It would be good to mix it up.

I always keep my expansions seperated when stored.  Because the vast majority of my games are played with beginners whom I'm teaching, I find it easier that way.  A lot less rules to explain off the bat.  It is not uncommon, however, for me to mix and match followers/meeples with different expansions.  I don't really consider them to be linked if they have different mechanics.  For example: I almost always play with the pig and builder and I think I do always play with the large follower regardless of whether I use I&C or T&B.  Sometimes I use the Mayor, but not the cart and barn, etc.

The only expansion whose tiles I've seperated is probably the wheel.  I have taken out the 19 wheel tiles and added them to a game with the base set and a few others.  The extra 50 or so tiles from the wheel would just make the game too long.

I have also mixed the 5 King tiles and the non-river GQ11 tiles in with my base set and do not seperate those.
