Title: Road Question
Post by: canada steve on March 15, 2007, 05:35:01 am
When a crossroad/t junction section is placed do you have to nominate which part of the road your thief is standing on ? I cant find it in the rules anywhere but my friend seems to think you have to, is this just him trying to do me out of points !!

Thanks

Yes you have - since junctions oficially are consdered to end the road(s).

In my group we don't do it like that however - only junctions with houses are considered stops, but bushes just split the road. In our experience it makes for a better game.

Thanks for that Tobias. I like your variation with the trees, might give that a go.

Just to reinforce what Tobias said above...YES, you HAVE TO designate which road segment your thief (to be Politically Correct and unbiased, we call him a traveler) is standing on.  Using your example a "T" intersecton has THREE distinct Roads and also THREE separate Fields for a potential Farmer.  And by extension then, an actual Cross-Road has FOUR different Roads and FOUR different Fields to chose from and the player laying this tile must make decision where to place their Meeple, which sometimes seems like it takes an eternity.  It the mental stimulation of making those multiple decision each turn that makes this game so therapeutic.

Using only intersections with Houses to count as end-points for the roads seems to me to be contrary to the official rules both v.1 & v.3; or at least to the way that we've always played them.  If the bushes completely break the write line of the road then we count it as an end point to all of the roads that converge at that spot.  Either way would work for your particuler gaming group as long as you were consistent.  To try to introduce such a subtle variation could lead to extensive arguements and a break down in the Meta-Game when it came time to scoring those Roads, especially when the Robber Baron tile (from the "King & Scout" Exp.) is used for the longest road built, since this is potentially a 25-35 point bonus (1 pt. per completed road segment) at End Game for the player in pocession of it and greatly in contention during our sessions.

Yes - of course it's a contradiction to the official rules, but we don't care :P

We've never had an argument over where roads stop. It's simple really - bushes aren't considered stops, that's all.

Yes Tobias, you can make your own house rules but now, you have the roundabouts to split roads. Sorry for only posting now, but I'm kind of new to this forum and I'm running all topics from top to bottom trying to get or give some help.
