After I played Carcassonne for the very first time, I opened up a new topic giving my opinion on the game and some of its expansions. Now, I am 100% (I'm not tempted to write like some guys, more than 100%-that's impossible) addicted to this game so I think I should state another opinion of some other kind.
As for the base game, there's nothing more to be told. It's a real I-can't-stop-playing-it game. As for the big expansions this is what I think:
- I&C, T&B and A&M are the most successful expansions mostly because that help game play. I mean people love these expansions because they can improve cities, roads and farms with its features. People like T&B more than I&C just because it came afterwards bringing plenty of awesome new features. Then A&M came up and it became nr. 1 favorite expansion, for the same reasons. Something helpful and new. Besides these expansions brought some new items to play with, such as big meeples, pigs, builders and the traders tokens. I think that if the 2009 expansions brings up the forest item, it'll make success for the same reasons, again.
- P&D and The Tower are lovely too, but they didn't make so much success because it makes players play agressive and some people won't accept that at all.
- Count, King and Consorts is somewhat different because this is what I call a multi-expansion. The King and Baron expansion is great because it makes people  build greater elements on the game. I'll write about the Baron ahead. Shrine and Heretics suffers a little like the agressive expansions, but when tiles are played alone they carry the cloisters success.
- The Catapult was a real disappointing expansion mostly because the main feature is action and boardgamers aren't that kind of players. I do understand that the creators tried to get something real new to the game, but I'm sorry to say that they didn't quite succeed. I think that's a kind of expansion not to be followed.
Now for the mini expansions.
- The Rivers are very successful because they act like a game before the game. I think it's really wonderful to build cities and roads around the river course.
- About GQ11 there's not really much to say. It only adds new tile configurations and some of them I do really like such as the spring-road, field-only tile and some others. It's good for who likes to play with new tiles. And I do.
- The Count. Oh, The Count! It should fit in the first category, I mean the beloved ones, but its rules are really confusing and the mechanics are not appealing. And the fact of making others score is not really appealing, now is it? The only good thing about it is that we can use a lay down Count to substitute the second dragon on the fan-made Dual Dragon expansion.
- I can't give you a strong opinion about the The Cathars because I don't have it, but I feel that what makes it success is the fact of being ... rare. Or not. When I'll get it and play, I'll add a comment here.
For now, I think I didn't miss anything. For those who manage to read this post this far, thanks... I swear I didn't mean to make it this long... Smiley

Good post.

The Catapult was a real disappointing expansion mostly because the main feature is action and boardgamers aren't that kind of players. I do understand that the creators tried to get something real new to the game, but I'm sorry to say that they didn't quite succeed. I think that's a kind of expansion not to be followed.

I agree. The Catapult is the first Carcassonne expansion that I have no plkans to purchase at present.

I like the GQ11 expansion, simply because it has the 'spring with a road' tile included. That made it worthwhile for me Smiley

The Count.

I don't like the Count.

I can't give you a strong opinion about the The Cathars because I don't have it, but I feel that what makes it success is the fact of being ... rare. Or not. When I'll get it and play, I'll add a comment here.

I wouldn't search out The Cathars. Yes, it's good to say that you own a copy of it, but there is no point in paying so much when RGG have released Cult, Siege and Creativity. The Siege tiles are really Cathars tiles in disguise Smiley

I have to say that judging by the photos on BGG of the Cathars tiles, the Siege tiles are better looking as well.

@Joff: Yes, agree. I'll go for CS&C instead. Unless I get Cathars for a bargain. On eBay, of course. And I think I saw one sell. I just can't remember where.

@Landarse: Maybe it's because they're newer...

G'day folks, absolute newbie to Carcassonne; only got the game about 25 days ago. My wife and I are hooked. We started off getting the game and the expansions T&B and D&P and the Catapult (just because it looked interesting). Sadly we now have all the official expansions (except Cathars) and one offshoot the Castle. IMO catapult is blaagh it stays in the box. We have played D&P which we found OK but for the time being have been sticking to I&C, T&B, River II we will blend the others in as we gain more experience. We also introduced the game to some friends on New Years Eve. This is our first venture into board games and are loving it didn't realise there was such a community out there. Great site

Welcome edmil. I introduced Carcassonne to my sister and her husband a few months ago. The have used Princess and Dragon but find it too confrontational for their liking, which is fine. It depends on who you are playing with and what mood you're in. I would also imagine that most copies of the Catapult will remain in the box!

I'm new to this site, too. I've only been playing carcassonne since christmas time(ish) and I love it! We had been playing the base game until my aunt suggested that we play two games together, which only got us hooked in further Smiley For my birthday last month my foreign exchange brother bought me my own set that came with the river, T&B, and I&C. I loved the new expansions but hadn't looked into getting anymore until he got me K&S and the River II. Now I have almost all of them and I'm hooked even more Smiley

I want the tower, but I don't think I can add anymore rules yet because my mom and siblings are pretty overwhelmed (oops). I don't think I'll ever get the catapult, it just doesn't look like fun :P I'm not too sure how I feel about the count yet. I read through the rules several times and looked around on here, trying to figure it out. It's really, really complicated :P We also haven't really used the fairy yet, but we LOVE the dragon, teehee. Mom will pick up a dragon piece and say something like "Oh! I can hear the meeples screaming! The dragon is coming!" It's very amusing.

I'm also not too sure about the cult. I'm the one who takes care of the score and making sure all of the rules are right and the cult has, so far, just annoyed me.

But, all in all, I love this game. I am obsessed Cheesy I'm saving up money to get another base set, or some extra expansions (maybe another P&D to play dueling dragons!)

Welcome to the site Smiley

The rules are rather easy - but as with everything else you need to learn it first! The Catapult is crap. Avoid it! The fairy is always forgotten; you are not alone. The Cult is rather interesting, but has no large impact on the game. Good intention though. I would say to play a lot before getting any more expansions. The game might be better (or at least different) with expansions, but it will also take more time to play. Balance it! Smiley

My long-term advice is get all the expansions, both large and small (or just a Big Box) but don't play with them all together. In addition to the confusion inherent in playing the Count with either of the Rivers (both require some rules bending), it ends up just being a long game where everyone is spread too thin. Pick a few expansions you like and play with them (I like Princess & Dragon for a theme and Inns & Cathedrals for quantity) and just include the other ones when you feel like a challenge or a change. Playing with all of them is just chaos and can get rather slow if less than six people are playing. Just my advice. Have fun!

My boyfriend refuses to play unless I take out all but the base game and one expansion, so yesterday we played with just the base game and P&D. It was fun Cheesy And today Mom and I played dueling dragons, but the dragon still didn't have much of an effect. We also decided to use all the tiles I have, but leave out the more complicated rules, which made it a lot more fun Smiley So I definitely see the benefit to only using a few expansions, or altering the rules a little. The game was much shorter and a lot less stressful for me Smiley

I am definitly going to wait at least a few more weeks, if not a month or two, to get the tower, though. That looks super confusing and I've got enough confusion that I'm sorting through right now Smiley
