Hello to the Forum!

I am new here and new to the game. I have purchased Carcassonne recently and most of the expansion for it (all but the first and mini). I am still digging the rules (for now the base version) and playing only the base game. I am from Finland, and English is not a native language for me, so I have some problems understanding some rules.

I have several questions concerning the basic tile and figure placement in certain situations. I did not found answers from the FAQ, so it seems that these things must be straight enough for all but me Smiley

I need your help here, because I am kind of stuck.  Huh? Thank you very much in advance for your help. My questions are

Q1. [River II, Pig herd]

Rules say "the pig herd earns the farmer in that field 1 additional per city he feeds, if he scores for any cities".

I did not understood what that field means here? field on that tile or the field containing that tile. In other words: Do you receive this bonus only if you place a farmer on that tile with pig herd or, alternatively, everybody in the game who's field contains pig herd tile will receive the bonus?

Q2. [Princess and Dragon, using magic portal]

Rules say, when using magic portal player "... must follow all other placement rules" and place a follower "for example, not on a feature with another follower."

I understood that. But, may I place my follower on the unoccupied feature on the occupied tile (where follower occupies some other feature) or the tile must be completely empty?

Q3. [Abbey and Mayor, placing barn]

Rules say "Player places his barn at the junction of four field segments" and "The player may place the barn, even if there are farmers on field segments connected to the place where he places the barn." I understand that, but rules do not mention if farmers are allowed to be on the segment itself or not.

My question is: may I place the barn on the segment where farmers are, or all four tiles of the segment must be free of farmers?

I hope that I managed to state my questions clearly enough Smiley

Regards, Eugene

Hello from the forum!

Congratulations on your recent purchase of this excellent game. I hope you will enjoy it as much as we do, go back to the store, and buy the expansions you don't have yet. The first expansion, Inns and Cathedrals, is one of the most essential.

Q1. [River II, Pig herd]

The term 'field' refers to all the tiles which compose the farm. It is not required for your farmer to be specifically deployed to the pig herd tile to receive the bonus point per city. The pig herd bonus applies only to the farm contaning the pig herd tile. It is possible for two players to have an equal number of farmers on this farm, and thus share in the points including the bonus point.

Q2. [Princess and Dragon, using magic portal]

To the best of my knowledge, the situation you describe is allowed.

Q3. [Abbey and Mayor, placing barn]

Yes, you can place the barn even if one of the four tiles contains farmers. Those farmers are going to be leaving shortly because the placement of the barn triggers farmer scoring for that farm.

Welcome suomenko!

For the record, I agree with Scott on the answers to all your questions.

This game gets a bit complicated when you use several expansions and many of us here have found that asking questions on this forum helps get quick answers, so keep posting!

It also helps to download Matt's Consolidated Annotated Rules from the download section.

Thank you all very much for your answers! I will study them along with the game and sure ask you more!  :Smiley Cheesy

I had some problems with my home computer so am writing you from an unusual location at the moment that you do not think me being ungrateful. I have found out recently about existing of Games Quarterly 11 mini extension, so I am looking into getting it as well (all local shop sells it for 5 eur).

regards, Eugene

Would just like to chime in and welcome you as well.  And if you are in Europe, you might want to preorder the Spielbox 2008 expansion so that you don't miss out on all the goodies!  I can't wait to get my copies of that.

Hello back again!

I have studied the expansion further and came along three other situations that I would like to clarify. No one of these is described in the FAQ, though however some might be directly indecent from the rules, but still... Would be great if somebody has a brief look into these. Thank you in advance and best regards from Finland.

Q4. [Dragon/Princess and Builder/Pig

Dragon (or princess) got the follower in the city. There are no more followers deployed there but the Builder. Do I need to remove the Builder from the city as well?

Equally, same situation with the field. Dragon eat the farmer, do I need to remove pig from the farm even though dragon did not eat it because it was on another . Otherwise what is the point of the pig without the farmer  Shocked

Q5. [Moving count in the Carcassonne]

I am in the situation that allows me to deploy a follower into capital. Though I decide not to do so. Am I allowed still to move the Count, or moving the Count is connected with deploying follower into capital?

Q6 [Wagon deploying - traveling to connected feature]

Am I allowed to move the wagon only to immediately connected feature, or to any feature that is in the connected chain. In other words, may wagon cross over the completed or occupied road/city to an empty one

Ex: a road that is closed by two cities on both ends. Wagon moved to one city. After this city is built, may the wagon move to another city, which is on another end of the road (here wagon need to cross the road)

and (added)

Q7[Moving wagon into/from the abbey]

If I understand the rules and the FAQ correctly, the wagon may be deployed in the abbey, but it is not allowed to move into or out of the abbey. Is it so?

Thank you again, Eugene

If I understand the FAQ correctly, the answer to question 6 is no.  A wagon can only move to a connected, uncomplete feature.  In your example, the 2 castles are not connected directly - it is connected with the road.

A4. The Builder and Pig are not allowed to exist on their own. If the supporting follower is removed, the builder/pig must also be removed. This is explicitly described in the CAR.

A5. The Count can only be moved when placing a follower into Carcassonne. If you decide not to place a follower, you also give up moving the Count. (This is not explicit, but implicit.)

A6. You may not travel through completed features to reach an uncomplete feature.

A7. Correct. The Abbey is not connected to anything. You would only deploy a wagon to the Abbey if you were out of regular followers.
