I know that when placing a barn on a field where there already is a farmer, gives the farmer 3 points/city.
But yesterday when we played Red placed a barn on a field where there were a Red farmer. Is it really possible to first get 3 points/city for the farmer and then later at the end of the game get 4 points/city for the barn.

Yes, it really is possible, and this is a good way of obtaining the maximum available points for farming Smiley

You can then re-use the returned meeple to score another farm! Smiley

Remember, using the pig to this effect is even better Smiley

You can get up to 5 points/city if you have both the pig and the pig farm tile from Rivers II.  That's one of the reasons why you would want to eject the existing farmers with your barn... to prevent them for scoring too much with the pig later in the game.
