Fascinating observation grandpoobah, I gave you a merit point for that (even though I disagree). Actually, the spring rule could be interpreted as supporting the opposite: if the farm goes "around" the spring, does it go 360 degrees around the spring (meaning only the spring and not the river block farms) or only 340 degrees around the spring (meaning both the spring and the river block farms). Thus playing devil's advocate, the spring rule is itself unclear.
I think this needs to be added to the list of questions for HiG.

Obviously the intention is that the river split farms; being pragmatic we all know that they do this. But, yes, excellent observation

It's a little more clear with the lake tile, because the lake goes completely to the edge.
