Hey there.

I'm new to Carcassone and I have some basic questions about Cloister tiles.

1) Can we place a Cloister tile that doesn't have a road drawn on it at the end of a road, thus closing it? If so, does this tile count for the scoring of the road?

2) When we place a Cloister that does have a road drawn on it, can we place a thief on the road? If so, how come we can't place a thief on the tile that doesn't have a road drawn on it, if the two kinds of tile are supposed to be the same?

Thanks.

1) No you cannot.  All sides of each tile must match adjacent tiles.  BUT, if you have an abbey it is the exception to the rule.  Abbeys (in the abbey and mayor expansion) complete all adjacent tiles.  Also, you can place a monk on an abbey so that would sort of have the effect you are talking about.

2) you may place a thief on ANY road you place, as long as the road is not occupied.  So if you draw a cloister with a road, you may place your meeple on the cloister as a monk OR the road as a thief OR the grass as a farmer.  The tile with nothing but a cloister and grass, and the tile with a cloister and a road are TWO DIFFERENT TILES.  On the first you can only place monk or farmer.  On the latter you may place a thief, monk, or farmer because it has a road.

When considering a tile, take into consideration all features on it.  In later expansions the cloisters come in all kinds of situations.  Just remember all sides of every tile must match up.

Does this help?
