Title: Formula D
Post by: Wishmaster on January 19, 2009, 02:55:39 pm
A group of five of us are sharing a Chinese takeaway followed by a first game of the new edition Formula D. We shall be playing the Monaco side of the board. Will let you know how it goes and compares to the old edition Formula De.

Cool beans.

The rules are basically the same. The terminology differs in a couple of places though. Have fun with it. Our monthly league night is this coming Thursday and we are racing on the Elkwater track. I was lucky enough to get all of the tracks last fall. :)

Well, I bought Formula D and played it a few times. Boys like it, girls don't. I got 4 extra old formula Dé circuits wich are compatible with Formula D. Wonderful game this one. A pity these old circuits are so expensive and hard to find...

Our monthly league night was last night. My wife, (girls do like it), took another first place finish. I am second in the driver standings, but thankfully my team is in first place.

League equals 6 players, (3 teams of 2).

Played the new version a couple of nights back. Monaco. Circuit is pretty much as before. like the new dashboard and gear stick and it's still a fantastic game. Big missed opportunity though... on a big bend (2/3) you have to remomember how many stops you've made... why didn't they add a section to the dashboard to do it!!! Oh well, looks like I'll be making some markers to cater for it. Race City next time...

Update for anyone who cares, (actually I just feel like bragging). :D

My driver, Willie Survive, finished season one in the top spot. The next two drivers were a mere 1 point behind me. Close to the end. In addition, our team took top spot by only 2 points. Top driver and 1st place team. WooHoo. {ch

Great idea! The meeple race fans! And I was going to buy custom made stop tokens from Litko. I like this idea much better. Thanks. :)

Here are the driver cards a friend of mine made for the league.

One of the guys that races brought his camera for the pre-season race. He snapped everyone's photo quickly before the race.

That would be me. I was leaning the wrong way in the picture, so Steve inverted it. I was wondering if anyone would notice. :)

That's the easy way to do it, but it does invert the text as well.  There are other PS tools that he could have used - skewer or perspective would probably be better to keep the text in the right order.

The logo could probably be re-inverted by itself.

The way I finished my first race of Season Two, I think Backwards is somehow appropriate. :)

I picked up this one today. I wanted a game that could support more players than 6, could be introduced (via beginners rules) to non-gaming folk, and would be fun. The rolling of the dice gives the impression that it is like 'normal' games for my non-gaming friends. I hope to introduce and begin a regular gaming session for these new non-gamers.

We had a quick 2 player game earlier using beginners rules, one lap and one car each, just to test the waters. Quite enjoyable. I heard somewhere (think it was on BGWScott episode) that 2 players are better off playing 2 cars each. What are your thoughts and how do you implement playing with 2 cars each? Do you each have 2 dashboards?

Each car would require it's own dashboard. This game really shines when there are 6 or more cars on the track. The interactivity of the cars and the resulting hazards is what gives the game depth. The pre-race build choices for which resources to allocate makes it enjoyable and racers soon become aware of the trade offs and the difficulty in allocating 20 points to various resources.

Glad you are enjoying the game. If you enjoy two cars with basic rules; more cars with advanced rules will be something you really enjoy.

A friend recently got this and I've gotten to play it twice now.  I enjoy it quite a bit.  Burned out on the last turn in my first game and I think I came in 3rd or 4th in my second game.  Can't remember for sure.  I realized just how difficult it is to actually use the 30 sided die.  I managed to do so once in my second game.  Both were played on the "front" side of the original board.  Looking forward to playing it again.
