Title: Perhaps a silly question Post by: mathguy89 on November 22, 2008, 09:15:41 pm I'm trying to find out how thick an individual tile is so that I can get the right size of chipboard to make my own tiles. My game is currently out of my house and I can't get to it for another week - long story. So if someone could give me that info I would greatly appreciate it.
Title: Re: Perhaps a silly question Post by: Novelty on November 22, 2008, 09:51:54 pm It's 3/32 of an inch. Do you want it in metric?
Title: Re: Perhaps a silly question Post by: mathguy89 on November 22, 2008, 10:46:31 pm that's perfect, thanks for the quick response.
Title: Re: Perhaps a silly question Post by: koolkat on November 23, 2008, 01:39:04 pm Could you tell me in metric, please Novelty?
Title: Re: Perhaps a silly question Post by: mathguy89 on November 23, 2008, 02:03:07 pm koolkat - 3/32 of an inch converts to 2.38 millimeters. But Novelty may be able to give you a more precise number.
Title: Re: Perhaps a silly question Post by: Novelty on November 23, 2008, 11:48:33 pm I don't think I can measure up to 0.01 of a milimetre... so it'll be around 2.5mm. I am just using a ruler on the side of a stack. I don't have any calipers I can use.
Title: Re: Perhaps a silly question Post by: koolkat on November 25, 2008, 06:26:43 am Thanks. Unfortunately, it's getting difficult to get a card that thick. I can only get a 3mm one. I think I'll go for the "Buy another Carc and replace tiles" solution...
Title: Re: Perhaps a silly question Post by: Novelty on November 25, 2008, 06:30:33 am You can order blank tiles from HiG koolkat. You're in Europe after all and it's in Euros. It should be relatively cheaper for you than say most of us outside Europe.
Title: Re: Perhaps a silly question Post by: koolkat on November 25, 2008, 06:33:01 am That would be wonderful. Sorry foir another silly question, but: How do I contact HiG?
Title: Re: Perhaps a silly question Post by: Novelty on November 25, 2008, 06:35:10 am Have you tried their website? http://www.hans-im-glueck.de/
Title: Re: Perhaps a silly question Post by: koolkat on November 25, 2008, 06:35:57 am Thanks! I guess I'll do that!...
Title: Re: Perhaps a silly question Post by: Novelty on November 25, 2008, 06:39:55 am When you get them feel free to take some pictures and post them here :)
Title: Re: Perhaps a silly question Post by: koolkat on November 25, 2008, 06:41:53 am You bet I will. Now I remember I already emailed Hig on that subject and I got no response. I'll give it another try... I'm not the easy quitter style...
Title: Re: Perhaps a silly question Post by: Novelty on November 25, 2008, 06:49:36 am Let us know what happens with the order! I'd like to know! Perhaps you can also check ebay to see if there's any blank tiles from Germany.
Title: Re: Perhaps a silly question Post by: koolkat on November 26, 2008, 08:40:32 am Finally I got an answer. I can buy a set of 12 blank tiles for 1€. It seems that, after all, I'm gonna make those fan-made expansions. Hip! hip! hip!...
I'll post some pics here as soon as they're ready. But it'll take long. But I won't forget. Title: Re: Perhaps a silly question Post by: Novelty on November 26, 2008, 08:54:57 am How much will shipping from Germany to Portugal cost?
Title: Re: Perhaps a silly question Post by: koolkat on November 26, 2008, 09:09:53 am Well, they only told me to put 1€ in an envelope for each set of 12 blank tiles I wanted. Didn't mention any shipping costs...
Title: Re: Perhaps a silly question Post by: Novelty on November 26, 2008, 09:20:29 am Then you'll probably get it for free. Sounds like a good deal! Let us know when you get the tiles.
Title: Re: Perhaps a silly question Post by: koolkat on November 26, 2008, 01:14:40 pm You got it! I'm gonna order them (20 sets) on Friday! I can't till then!
Title: Re: Perhaps a silly question Post by: Whaleyland on November 26, 2008, 05:42:07 pm Can you give me an email address or web-form to fill out for ordering blank hexes. I live in the UK and I don't know if they will ship them to me for only a Euro since I am in that vague, sort-of-Europe, but sort-of-Rio-Grande-Game territory. Thanks!
Title: Re: Perhaps a silly question Post by: koolkat on November 26, 2008, 06:05:05 pm Here's a copy of the email sent by HiG:
******************************************************** Please send us a letter with your address and request and just put 1€ per tableau (á 12 blank tiles) into the letter. Just keep attention that no coins are loose in the envelope, but just fix them with a strip. Our address is: Hans im Glück Verlag Birnauer Str. 15 D - 80809 München Deutschland ********************************************************* Write them a letter with the due money amount and your adress and it should be a piece of cake... Greetings Title: Re: Perhaps a silly question Post by: Whaleyland on January 28, 2009, 04:57:09 pm Hey koolkat, where are you located in Europe (country-wise) and how long did it take you to receive your tiles from HiG? I am in the UK and will be ordering 5 sets this or next week and am just curious. Cheers!
Title: Re: Perhaps a silly question Post by: meepleater on January 31, 2009, 02:26:30 am nice... wonder where in Australia I'm going to get euros?? I think I might have a few in my coin collection, or my sister might have a few left from her trip to Germany... I hope they deliver to Australia...
EDIT: I found 7 euros in my coin collection... 84 tiles should be enough for most expansions that I will make... Title: Re: Perhaps a silly question Post by: Novelty on January 31, 2009, 05:42:10 am They don't deliver outside Europe, and it's a maximum of 5 sheets per person. Yeah, it sucks, I know.
Title: Re: Perhaps a silly question Post by: meepleater on January 31, 2009, 04:46:49 pm :'(
Title: Re: Perhaps a silly question Post by: Novelty on January 31, 2009, 11:35:45 pm Well, you could always buy small expansions like Rivers 2 and CS&C and use those instead to make your tiles.
Title: Re: Perhaps a silly question Post by: meepleater on February 01, 2009, 02:22:18 am Too expensive If I want to make a lot of tiles... I don't suppose anyone would be selling some on BGG marketplace?
Title: Re: Perhaps a silly question Post by: Novelty on February 01, 2009, 07:32:45 am If you want a large quantity of blank tiles, you could always try the link Joff mentioned in this post (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/forum/index.php?topic=433.msg8412#msg8412).
Edit: You could always buy second hand tiles. I just checked ebay Australia and there's a lot of the base set going for A$11.50 only, which I think is a bargain. Title: Re: Perhaps a silly question Post by: Whaleyland on February 06, 2009, 02:34:10 pm As an answer to my own question, a set of tiles takes roughly four days to arrive to the U.K. after the request has been sent. The turn-over time is amazing, so I assume most of the rest of Europe is as good.
Title: Re: Perhaps a silly question Post by: meepleater on February 06, 2009, 02:57:42 pm At my school, there is a German exchange happening this year (I can't go, though I want to), so I might give one of my friends some money and get them to buy C,K&C, and then use the tiles from the mini expansions...
Title: Re: Perhaps a silly question Post by: Novelty on February 07, 2009, 04:25:26 am You might want to give at least 2 of them 5euros each so that you get 10 sheets. Remember, they can only get 5 sheets maximum per person.
Title: Re: Perhaps a silly question Post by: Whaleyland on February 07, 2009, 12:42:01 pm Is it 5 sheets max per person, or 5 sheets max per order? I really want to know so I can order some more. I kind of want to sell them on BGG or eBay too, since people outside of Europe can't get them. ;D
Title: Re: Perhaps a silly question Post by: Laserschwert on February 07, 2009, 06:03:32 pm I kind of want to sell them on BGG or eBay too According to "Hans im Glück" that's exactly what they DON'T want to. The reason is not to be mean, but because a lot of people create poor-quality prints of self-made expansions and sell them on eBay. That alone wouldn't be a problem, but unfortunately some of the people who buy these self-made expansions think that they are official products, and complain to HiG about the bad quality of "their" products. That's why they don't want to enforce this even more by giving away huge amounts of blank tiles. By the way, I've received my blank tiles from them, and honestly, to me they are not the best way to make your own tiles. The problem is actually the blank side, as it is completely white. And since this white side isn't just on top of the tiles, but a little bit down to their sides as well (resulting from cutting... just like the regular tiles), it makes them immediately recognizable in the stack. Play with the forest expansion? Don't want to pull a forest tile? Just avoid the ones with the white edges... I think getting some base-sets for a few bucks on eBay might work better, as their tiles look the same as the others when in the stack. Title: Re: Perhaps a silly question Post by: edmil on February 16, 2009, 10:17:39 pm I ended up buying two more basic sets of Carcassonne to make up the forest tiles. Because these sets include the river tile I ended up with 160+ tiles.
I spent ages getting the colors of the tiles as close as possible. I've tried numerous types of different papers and finally settled on Ilford Satin photo paper. it's a little thicker than non photo paper (200gsm) but it seems to give the right sheen to the tile. I add the crosshatch of the tile using Corel Paintshop Pro Photo. It was initially a lot of work (and a lot of ink and paper) to get the tiles as near as possible in color and while not 100% successful it's pretty close. Where we play at home the lighting makes the difference in color is unnoticeable. The downside to using the photo paper is that it has a slightly different feel and is a bit thicker. I'm not sure of its longevity either - time will tell. |
