Title: lavendar fields
Post by: wellidesigns on October 13, 2008, 02:25:47 am
I am currently working on some lavendear field tiles
no rules yet, just trying to make some good looking tiles
what do you think of this first try ? It's far from perfect, but I just wanted to hear your opinion on the looks of the lavendar. Don't mind theplacing, this isn't correct yet !
I wanted to add some sort of bee token to these tiles, to indicate the making of honey

I like the artwork on the tiles. I also like the concept of honey producing.

I like the bee icon and the nice purple tiles.  Nice job done!  And there's borders as well.

So, how to work this?

A farm contining the Bee icon gets a Honey (Bee) trade counter at the end of the game for the majority occupier of the farm. The player with the most Bee counters, gets an extra 10 (or more) points? (or perhaps even for the minority occupier of the farm?)

Have not thought this through completely yet ;)

Joff, it's something like that yeah
I'm not really thinking about the rules...lol...just having fun in photoshop :-)
and I'm not that good at defigning new rules...

OK, I've finished the counter and have returned it.  I won't be posting it here... I'll leave that to the creator of this expansion. {wv

I had to redo the entire cards but didn't quite achieve the same look of the lavendar
what do you guys think ? is this okay or does it look to "fluffy" ??

I think the lavender looks fine, but some patches are too... sparse (e.g. 2nd row, 3rd column).  Also the one around most around bushes seems fine, with the exception of the bottom row, 1st column tile.  I also think 2nd row, 1st column looks a bit weird because the shadows at the bottom of the city doesn't match that of the lavender.  Would it be too much work to redo those tiles?

I love this idea by Joff. Does anyone has some more suggestions on how to use these tiles  ? I'm not very creative when it comes to making up new rules.

My idea was to place a meeple on them, when surrounded by tiles you get a bee token and 9 points. meeple returns to player
those with most bee tokens at the end get a 10 point bonus

very simple and easy, as said I 'm not that creative ...lol...
so who has some better ideas ?

I like your idea better.  Why make things too complicated?

Title: Re: lavendar fields
Post by: Joff on October 14, 2008, 06:54:13 am
So, you mean another Cloister type??

Title: Re: lavendar fields
Post by: Novelty on October 14, 2008, 07:02:52 am
As opposed to another trade goods type??

How about as a builder type?  If a player plays a lavendar tile that connects to their farm with at least one of their farmers, they get to pick a second tile and have a second go (but not a third) during the same turn?

When a farmer in a field is scored before the end of the game (i.e. with a barn), and the farm contains lavendar tiles, the farmer gets bees token equal to the number of lavendar farms on the field?  At the end of the game, the person with the most bee tokens get 10 points?

Title: Re: lavendar fields
Post by: Joff on October 14, 2008, 07:23:10 am
The reason for this is Cloisters are difficult to complete at the best of times, we also have shrines and goldmines... I can see this as getting difficult to complete.

Title: Re: lavendar fields
Post by: Joff on October 14, 2008, 07:24:58 am
It's a shame that you couldn't enclose every 'honey farm' with a road ;)

The bee farmer scores X number of points per tile enclosed with road... just thinking aloud!

it was indeed very difficult to complete
we played it with the basic carcassonne + a lot of unofficial expansions (all from carcassonne-city)
metropole extension,
dobbelzug extension
Stadtviertel
river 1
river 2
fischerhutte
grundherr
neue wegen
goldmines

and we only finished 2 lavendar tiles
so using them as a kinda cloister tile doesn(t really work

isn't this just like the fruit traders variant?

Title: Re: lavendar fields
Post by: Cappy on October 14, 2008, 03:38:51 pm
In my opinion, the lavendar rows are almost too fluffy. Too much contrast between your lights and darks? Maybe the highlighting you've done along one side of each row doesn't need to be there? The art style in Carc is very flat and your flower bushes have a 3D feel to them.

The bee icon is great. Novelty, might you add a hint of lavendar to the trade token?

The honey farmers could easily be a version of Fruit Traders... not neccessarily a bad thing. Thinking, thinking of something to make them unique, but still a trade good.

Regardless, I like the look and plan to print some these tiles out when wellidesigns proclaims them done!

nice! can't wait to see what you come up with in terms of rules!

Title: Re: lavendar fields
Post by: Scott on October 14, 2008, 08:16:56 pm
I'm feeling rather partial to the idea of a builder-type, where placing the lavender tile allows drawing another tile in the same turn.

Title: Re: lavendar fields
Post by: wellidesigns on October 15, 2008, 02:38:10 am
Carcassonne: Lavender Fields is an unofficial expansion for Carcassonne. This expansion consists of 12 tiles and 12 bee tokens.
The majority occupier of the farm gets at the end of the game bees token equal to the number of lavender farms on the field.
The person with the most bee tokens gets 15 points.

Honestly, i can't come up with anything else. I just don't know yet how to act if a farm is owned by two farmers.

Here's my version of the rules.  I'll be using this version to play with these tiles.

Edit: Please disregards the Acknowledgement section... It should really say something else I think...

Yeah, I didn't really contribute anything to this expansion except agreeing with you on the builder-style mechanic. Not worthy of a mention this time. :-\

You really need to install those Barbedor fonts I sent you. :)

okay Novelty, I'm gonan stick with your version of the rules
but..how do you give out the tokens when two farmers occupie the farm and thus the lavendar fields ??

Here's the updated version of my rules (http://www.dukenostalgia.com/junk/lavfields02.pdf).  Are you going to do something different sonja?  If not, can we move this expansion to completed by the end of the week?

Very well done.

I have just realised, as I read the finalised rules, how good this actually is.

It never even occurred to me before that point that farmers do not get double turns! Well, they do now :)

Having said that, neither do Monks get double turns... expansion anyone? ;)

Seriously, a great job. Super artwork and clever, simple rules.

 {wv  It deserves it

Title: Re: lavendar fields
Post by: Novelty on October 17, 2008, 11:17:24 pm
{wv Only because I like that smiley.

Well, there's always vineyards for "double-turning" shrines... and I'll wait for wellidesigns to find a third item to "double-turn" cloisters...

I found a typo in the final rules, so here is a corrected version of the rules (http://www.dukenostalgia.com/junk/lavenderfields11.pdf) and the zipped version with the tiles (http://www.dukenostalgia.com/junk/lavenderfields.zip).

To each his (or her) own!  It takes all sorts to make a Carcassonne world.  I don't think I would have come up with the ideas that you guys have been originating and I look forward to what will be done!

Title: Re: lavendar fields

Vineyards would be a good double-turn tile for monks, since making wine was/is a popular pasttime among them.

Don't get me wrong, I like playing in wellidesign's world. And I like Joff's Carcassonne and I'm enraptured by the deep forest... oh, who am I kidding? I just like all the varations of Caracassonne! ::)  :D
