Title: CAR for Hunters & Gatherers
Post by: Scott on September 07, 2008, 03:37:07 pm
I've mentioned in the past that I'd like to see something like the CAR for the other Carc games, and today I decided to put my money where my mouth is as the saying goes. Despite my pretty much non-existant knowledge of the German language, I'm going to translate the rules for Hunters and Gatherers into English and add the FAQ as footnotes. To aid me in this near-impossible endeavor are the RGG rules for H&G which are already in English so that I know what the text should look like. My plan is to translate using Google language tools, and then rewrite the result to make sense. So far it seems to be working ok.

Here is my progress thus far:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=PGDOA87N (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=PGDOA87N)

I'm hoping to finish this just before or around the same time as the next version of the CAR. Extracting the tile images is a slow and tedious process.

Feedback/suggestions welcome.

Finished the first two pages of the HiG rules:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=O0UNM1PM (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=O0UNM1PM)

I'm finding that in many cases, the German text is identical to Carcassonne, so often I've been using Matt's translation instead of Google's since I think he's more reliable. So far, the only serious deviation from HiG is that I added the numbers in front of "Place a tile" and "Deploy a tribal member or hut" as in Carcassonne. I think it's helpful, and it doesn't change the meaning of anything.

I know people are reading this topic, but I was expecting at least a small response. Your encouragement here would be helpful, particularly since I don't even like H&G which makes it hard to stay motivated.

I'd love to check it out, but don't know how to get to it on that site.  I got H & G from RGG and would like to see if any differences.

First post here so hope you can help me out.

Thanks

Scott, could you get Joff to host it on his site or something?  Megaupload is a hassle to download from...

Hmm... it's a hassle for me to go through Joff every time I want to share a file. How about a different file sharing site, like Mediafire?

Well, whatever works for you, Scott. I can spare some space, should you need it. Just let me know :)

Megaupload makes you type in some letters before you can download; I can see that as being a little confusing. But Mediafire has a big giant link that says "Click here to download". People should be able to figure that out.

Ok, got the download. I like the look of it, even though I don't play H&G, so I would have trouble verifying the rules, etc. This is a nice compliment to Matt's CAR. Excellent work.

What application are you using to edit this Scott? (PM me)

Was able to have a look at it on the new site.  Thanks

Looks great so far.

Thanks to those who have offered their words of encouragement. Life has been too busy these past weeks, but I am working on changing that. I want to finish this.

There is no time limit, do not feel as though you have to get this done asap.  Everyone here is a volunteer and any work, however long it may take to complete, is appreciated by all.

The only pressure I feel is from myself. I have a lot of things on my plate and always taking on more (sometimes too much). I quit my job this morning (not because of this) so I should be able to polish it off in the next week or two.

Wow, sorry to hear that Scott.  As Gantry said, please don't feel pressured to finish this if you don't have the time to do so...

Finished 4 of 6 pages. MediaFire seemed to work pretty good last time, so we'll use it again:

After lunch I'll get started on page 5.

Finished pages 5 and 6:
http://www.mediafire.com/?mamaognyyn3 (http://www.mediafire.com/?mamaognyyn3)

To-do:
  • add footnotes/FAQ
  • add Scout expansion
  • tile distribution
  • selected variations (I managed to salvage the list from the old HiG site using the Internet Wayback Machine)

Title: Re: CAR for Hunters & Gatherers
Post by: Scott on October 03, 2008, 10:02:18 pm
Added footnotes and FAQ for basic rules:
http://www.mediafire.com/?rkteq0bifim (http://www.mediafire.com/?rkteq0bifim)

To-do:
  • add Scout expansion
  • add footnotes/FAQ to Scout expansion
  • tile distribution
  • selected variations

Rejigging the layout to make room for the footnotes was not fun. Matt, I feel your pain.

Nice work.  Noticed a note about the sacred shrine bonus tile that was not in my RGG version.  It will make a big difference playing.

Thanks

That's interesting considering the only thing HiG had additional regarding the shrine tile was a reminder that a hunter can only be deployed if the meadow is not already occupied.

Yup thats what I'm talking about.  It wasn't clear so we used it to steal someones meadow.

Added rules, footnotes, and FAQ for Scout:
http://www.mediafire.com/?zy0ddwktyzq (http://www.mediafire.com/?zy0ddwktyzq)

I should probably add a footnote about how Scout is bundled with King and that's the only way to get it... Other than that, just need tile distribution lists and selected variations and this thing will be done.

Good job.  A few comments:

1. The numbers on the index looks funny, particularly the last two "11"s
2. There is a "1." just before Play a tile under Scout which may be redundant because there's no "2".
3. I think you should state that this game is not compatible with normal Carcassonne but shares ideas with it.
4. Perhaps there could be a "how to tell apart the tiles" section
5. Remember you asking me to change the picture in Carc the guide (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/forum/index.php?topic=400.0) for Scout to the back of the box with the Scout text?

6. You could also perhaps also mention that H&G is the only spin-off with an official expansion (i.e. the scout part of K&S)

Can't wait to see how you handle the variants!

1. The numbers on the index looks funny, particularly the last two "11"s

It's partly because of the font and partly because of the differences in size. I'll play with it and see what I can do.

2. There is a "1." just before Play a tile under Scout which may be redundant because there's no "2".

The "1." refers to the first of the three steps: place a tile, deploy a follower, score. Some of the expansions in the original CAR have 1 and 3 without 2, or even 3 by itself.

3. I think you should state that this game is not compatible with normal Carcassonne but shares ideas with it.

Good idea. I will probably put this in the Introduction.

4. Perhaps there could be a "how to tell apart the tiles" section

I will make a note about the reverse side of the Scout tiles having the Shaman on them.

5. Remember you asking me to change the picture in Carc the guide (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/forum/index.php?topic=400.0) for Scout to the back of the box with the Scout text?

I remember that, but I think I'm missing what you are getting at?

6. You could also perhaps also mention that H&G is the only spin-off with an official expansion (i.e. the scout part of K&S)

The thought never crossed my mind. Since you feel it important, I will put it in the Introduction.

There's no picture of the box of K&S in the guide.  I was hinting you should include a picture of Scout.

Also, it might be worth it to note the differences between the H&G tiles back and the original tile back.  Oh and you might also want to mention that H&G & Scout are not compatible with the other spin-offs.

Done. I've broken away from the CAR a bit here in that I put it on the expansion page instead of the front cover.

Also, it might be worth it to note the differences between the H&G tiles back and the original tile back.

I feel that's a little out-of-scope.

Oh and you might also want to mention that H&G & Scout are not compatible with the other spin-offs.

Done.

New version won't be uploaded until I add the tile distribution lists.

Added tile distribution lists, and most of Novelty's suggestions:
http://www.mediafire.com/?zgmljnj2gvy (http://www.mediafire.com/?zgmljnj2gvy)

All that's left to do are the selected variations. I was also thinking of maybe having a page about the computer version from way back; need to research that a little more.

Not sure how I did it, but somehow the file size is half of the previous version. Will be interesting to see what size the next version is.

Selected variations have been added:
http://www.mediafire.com/?jmu22vlktnz (http://www.mediafire.com/?jmu22vlktnz)

Barring any glaring oversights, I think this is pretty much finished. Found the site for the official computer game, but not sure what or how much to write about it. Might not be enough to deserve an entire page, so I might just stick a paragraph about it on the Introduction page.

I promise this is the last update for today. Pretty sad that I've been working on this almost exclusively for the past two days. Going through the whole process gave me a deeper respect, appreciation, and understanding of how much effort Matt has put into the CAR and how much effort is required to update the CAR. My hat goes off to him even though I am not wearing it right now.

I'll give a few days (probably a week) for everyone to submit any further additions/corrections, and then I expect to publish version 1.0

Wow, this looks really good.  And I see my name there!  Thanks :)

How do you plan on adding the variants?  Just as a list?  Do you plan on giving the stone wall more space than the other variants?

Title: Re: CAR for Hunters & Gatherers
Post by: Scott on October 05, 2008, 12:33:28 am
The only variants I intended to add were the ones listed on the official Carc web site, which is done now. Never planned to add Stone Wall or any others. My goal was just to have the "official" stuff.

It's been pretty quiet in here so I'm going to assume there are no major issues that require any further delay in publishing version 1.0, so here it is:

Gantry, can you add this to the Downloads? I leave it to your discretion whether to make it a public download or a members only download.

Still playing forum catch-up and I just stumbled across this thread.

THANK YOU, Scott!

Wish I had been there to encourage you during the dark times, but perhaps you can now rest easier knowing you've made one gamer's life a bit sunnier. :)

Thanks, I also rest easier now that it is finally finished and no longer hanging over my head. Fortunately none of the other Carc games have FAQ or expansions, so the need to do a CAR for those games is much less.
