Anyone got any recomendations of games that are'nt a part of the Carcassonne family but have a similar game mechanic?

similar mechanic as in how?  tile laying and then playing off the tiles?

Abduction is an interesting game, but with cards instead of tiles.

Yes, I meant as in placing a tile that forms a part of the 'board' you play on, thus giving you a different game world each time.

I've got Sorceror's Cave and Mystic Wood. Much bigger tiles (although they could be created a lot smaller), but both create a new world each game.

On a previous visit to my FLGS, I was convinced to sit down to a game of Alhambra, which is a tile-laying game. There's a ton of expansions for it too. Basically each player is building their own city separate from others. Instead of merely drawing tiles, you have to buy them using combination of cards. The cards vary in value, and there are four colors. Only cards of the same color can be used together. Didn't really appeal to me, but others might like it.

I love Tikal - great game.

My dad just got me Amazing Space Adventure (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/31138) which is an exact copy of carc - but with cards and other little variants.

Interesting game.  Looks a bit more involved to some extent.

It is and it isn't.  I think with the expansions Carc is a stronger game, but the cards in ASA do make it a little different.

The artwork on the tiles isn't even close - Carc destroys ASA there.  The "city" tiles in ASA are stars, but it's confusing to see which sides of the tiles they are on sometimes.
