Title: Reward/Penalty Post by: Gantry on March 17, 2008, 11:14:48 pm In the grand scheme of things, our discussions are for the enjoyment of a pastime, not raging political or religious debates. From the ABOUT MERIT POINTS (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/forum/index.php?topic=15.0) post:
Quote Reasons to hand out a merit penalty include things like a member being rude, demeaning or any action unbecoming of a member. Remember, in addition to a penalty you can also use the "Report to moderator" link in his or her post if you feel it should be looked at. You should not hand out more than one penalty to a fellow member for any one thing, nor should you use it to "get even" with or punish someone simply because you don't like them! I think that in retrospect, the listed reasons for penalizing a member should be left up to the moderators if it ever reaches that level. Most of our discussions, even when we disagree, are well-natured and civil. After some thought, and given the positive nature of the Carc Central community, I think the best thing to do would be to allow members to reward each other, but not penalize. It's set up now. Unless there's a huge outcry against this, I'll leave it as is. Title: Re: Reward/Penalty Post by: dwhitworth on March 18, 2008, 12:16:48 am I agree with your decision here Gantry.
(. . . . unless of course we wanted to demerit an administrator . . . in which case we would have to resort to the "defenestrate" button on the sidebar . . ;D ) Title: Re: Reward/Penalty Post by: Joff on March 18, 2008, 02:30:13 am That is much better... but does that now mean I really can't demerit Matt by 10 points? :) ;) ;D

Seriously though, this is probably a better way to go. I saw a circumstance a couple of months ago when someone had a -1 score. That might conceivably be valid in some circumstances (it wasn't in the case I mention, and I corrected it immediately), but it's just going to make the member feel attacked otherwise. And if they really were disruptive, I feel that the merits system isn't a strong enough sanction anyway. Just look at the recent discussion where the issue came up. Being deducted points made the person feel more attacked, not less. To begin with, neither the person in question nor anyone else was being combative. But the deducted points made it seem as if they were. That doesn't help to build bridges and mend an awkward situation. And if someone is being a real pain, we (admins) have the power to ban the member, remove posts, and so on. I'm for it staying like this. Title: Re: Reward/Penalty Post by: Novelty on March 18, 2008, 04:33:33 am Let me also chime in by saying I like it this way as well. Now I just have to earm my merit points...
Edit:Thanks to whoever that gave me that one merit point! Title: Re: Reward/Penalty Post by: canada steve on March 18, 2008, 11:56:48 am Yep looks good to me. Only other site I had seen this on made you enter a reason for merits or demerits that the person could see.
Title: Re: Reward/Penalty Post by: Tobias on March 18, 2008, 12:48:44 pm Yes, this is better. And if bad comes to worse there are other ways to demerit Gantry and Matt; I could have them read my posts, for example ;D

The happy ending here is that this now puts the merit system into the front of our minds, so we'll be thinking about it more when reading the forums and more inclined to award points. In theory, people's merit score will go up as a result of this whole thing.
Title: Re: Reward/Penalty Post by: Novelty on March 24, 2008, 09:32:18 am OK, I have 2 merit. That's not a lot, but how do I find out who gave me those 2 merit points and for which post? Is that even possible?

Is that even possible? Officially, you can't find out, it's not possible! However, unofficially, I am in a position to let you know where one of those points come from and why ;) Title: Re: Reward/Penalty Post by: Gantry on March 24, 2008, 01:02:43 pm I can turn on tracking, however since we're only doing rewards now, I don't think its necessary
