Title: How to get 12 expansions into the original box
Post by: mjharper on January 28, 2008, 03:23:47 pm
(This one started over here (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=26&topic=227.msg1804#msg1804)).

Yes, folks, it is possible. And here is the proof:

The two boxes for The Count have the river tiles in them, while the box for The River II has the Count tiles in it. Better use of space. And the bag with the meeples fits snugly alongside the tower dispenser.

There are a couple of tiles which aren't included. Obviously, there's only one set of Count tiles, even though I've got there copies. And things like the duplicate King and Robber Baron have been left out, as well as the original lake and spring, that sort of thing. But it included every other tile from all the expansions to date, even the duplicates from King and Scout that are included in the 6th expansion.

One end does stand proud ever so slightly, but otherwise it's a good enough fit until I find the perfect box, whatever that might be…

I never would have believed it possible!

Well, well, well.... Photographic proof as well. Nice one!! (Bet you've still got all the other boxes neatly stacked some as well though!)

Okay, I know about that one. Looks awesome. But…

But I currently have all of the pieces in the original box for one good reason: because there are no dividers, and I can arrange it however I want. The problem with that box is the same as for the CAR—HiG keep releasing new expansions, and every time they do there's a tonne of new stuff to fit in. Now, I don't know how much spare room—room for growth—the box has, but until I do, I'm not going to invest that much money in it. Beautiful, yes; but is it functional?

No idea. But since it has a reserved space for the Tower, I imagine you can fill that up as well, and that's quite a lot of space.

But it's about €45 so it's not gratis.

Wow, I've gotta go try this layout out.  BTW, what are those orange blobs?

do you mean the 2 things inside the box at the bottom?

The CarcassonneBox has room for 70 additional tiles according to the web site. Should be enough to hold the two latest expansions with room to spare. I would love to get a CarcBox, but with shipping the price is over $100!

An alternative would be to make your own box out of wood and design it with room to spare.

Although portability is an issue, for me it is not big enough to try cram everything into the main box. The obsessive-compulsive side of me can hardly bear the thought.

@Scott: ;D

@meeplebot: Hey, long time no see!

@Novelty: The orange blobs a a couple of piece kidnapped (meeplenapped?) from Caylus (http://Caylus), which I use to mark the largest city and the longest road on the scoreboard. Could use anything, but these work well.

We use a brown meeple for the Robber Baron and a purple meeple for the King. They look the part!  ;D

For those interested they came from http://www.meeplepeople.com/ (http://www.meeplepeople.com/).

We also use huts from the board game Clans for Kevin Graham's Trading Posts variant (which we include most games, as it is very unobtrusive). I have also rewrote his variant with comprehensive instructions for those who are interested.

Lol, as long as you don't think i'm stealing your CAR look! (I was, actually ;))

I kept the formatting very similar, as I thought I might attempt to collect the best variants together in a similar reference guide to CAR.

How can I produce a pdf file, without spending £'s? Is there a simple way? At the moment the document is in MS Word format.

No, I think it's about time the concept of the CAR was changed. I'm thinking now there should be three sections: Rules, Appendices, and User Stuff. When we're a bit clearer on the way the layout is going, I'll set up a forum or vote or something for the content people most want to see.

No idea. If I want a PDF, I got to 'Print' and then click 'PDF'. In any app. But that's a Mac for you.

You can export documents to PDF in Open Office, which is free :)

It will install new "printer" to your app. and than you can print (after chosen PDF Creator printer) any document(s) (word etc.) to PDF file(s).

I'm confused.  Do you mean that if the longest road scored is 12, you use it to mark 12 on the scoreboard?

I'm using a brown city piece and a brown road piece "from" Settlers of Catan. Not actually from Settlers of Catan since I do not own the game. I drew them out on paper, guessing at the dimensions, and had my brother make them from wood scraps. Then I got my Mom to paint them brown to be distinct from other pieces.

I like the idea of more user stuff in the CAR, but considering the vast amount of potential stuff out there, it could become uber long.

Do you mean that if the longest road scored is 12, you use it to mark 12 on the scoreboard?

That's the idea. Makes life a lot easier.

Indeed it does. Especially in long games with lots of expansions. We used to use a couple of figures from The Incredibles that we got from Kinder Surprise, but they were a bit big ;)

Some prefer to play the markers (whatever they may be) dirctly on the longest road/city. However, we stick to laying our brown and purple meeples on the scoreboard as we find that the easiest.

If you lay the piece on the feature itself, you're still stuck recounting the size each time that someone forgets. Putting them on the scoretrack is indeed easiest, because it's the size that matters. Knowing which road and city it was is not relevant.

I have been slowly compiling all the variants I can find in a database (we call it the "Variant Registry"), an eventual bit of content for Carc Central.  I'm not picky; they don't even have to be "good" to be included, what's more important is comprehensiveness. It's THE BIGGEST VARIANT REGISTRY ON THE PLANET!!!! (sorry couldn't resist!)  ;D

You can easily produce pdf files for free. I use PDF reDirect (http://www.exp-systems.com/) by EXP systems, but some other popular ones are Foxit (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/creator/), CutePDF (http://www.cutepdf.com/), and pdf995 (http://www.pdf995.com/) most of which I think are still free.  They way they work is that they become a "printer", so you just go to File, Print, and they'll show up as a driver, then instead of printing the file it creates a pdf for you on your hard drive.  As well, Adobe used to have an online service that you could sign up for that would allow you to create a small number of pdfs for free, but the other solutions are much less hassle, and no sign up.

Download a copy of OpenOffice.org

It's a completely free Office suite that reads .doc and you can convert to .pdf using it - Excellent product!

If you are using MS Office 2007 then you can download a free MS addon that lets you save as PDF:

Does anyone own the Carcassonne Box?

This is the specially made wooden Carcassonne Box. They are cropping up on eBay at present and I was wondering about the quality of them.

Although i don't own any to verify the size, that box reminds me of an old photographic slide holder that a friend used to have, I wonder if tiles are similarly sized and would fit nicely in such a container?

Richardbrand: nice find!

I just happened to have a photographic slide nearby, and it is 5cm square. Carc tiles are 4.5cm square. It might be possible to modify photographic slide stuff to fit Carc tiles by adding a quarter of a centimeter of padding.

Thanks :-)

It was going to be built into Microsoft Office 2007, but legal bickering between Microsoft and Adobe put an end to that...

I like the slide case idea. I think my Dad might have some of those boxes around - I'll have a look.

I don't know if this is old news, but it was news to me.  I emailed the folks over at catanbox (makers of carcassonne box) and asked about the possibility of shipping to USA.  Here is their reply:

"I can send it but it is at your own risk. The damaging during transport will not be our responsibility. The costs will be around 25 euro for shipping only.

Also we are working with Mayfair to try and get them in the USA as well by the end off the year.(Bold mine)

If this is true then this will definitely be my solution.

I suspect the same goes for Canada. I'd much rather buy one of these than attempt to make my own.

I notice that the site also says there is room for a further 70 cards. Not sure about extra pieces though. Looks good. I've emailed for a UK P+P price.
