Title: Collaborative expansions again.
Post by: CKorfmann on January 30, 2012, 02:24:54 pm
I was thinking it would be nice to begin working on collaborative expansions again since our active membership is on the rise.  It would be interesting to see what we could come up with.

I feel like a lot of work went into several collaborative expansions as well as individually designed expansions that have been lost because they never get posted for download.  They are hidden somewhere in the forums.

The downloads page hasn't been updated since Tuesday, 16 November 2010.

Perhaps digging out what has been done will encourage participation in collaborative projects again.

We'll do it.  I know some of them are finished for the most part.  As soon as we can get access to the download page again, we'll get it straight.  Scott is already planning on straightening up the download page(s).

I will try to help :)
But tell how this works? Didn't participate in last ones cause I didn't know this site back then.

Hopefully we can get Novelty back.  He's the one that had everything organized.  Otherwise, there will be a learning curve for whoever takes it over.

Yeah, I'm not looking forward to bringing things up-to-date and would prefer it Novelty would come back.

Just a thought...
There is an Add-on Module for SMF that is a download system. Might be the path of least resistance and then the Downloads would be part of the Forum.

EDIT:

I just checked and this add-on works with SMF V1 and V2 sites...

Interesting idea, though it would not provide as much detail as what Novelty has done. Also, I think I would like to discuss with Gantry before going ahead with something like this.

No worries. Any suggestions that I make are just that, merely suggestions trying to help streamline the operations and maintenance of the site. I certainly understand that Gantry needs to be involved in those decisions. Lately, I have been doing a lot of work on my two SMF sites so I am merely trying to share information I have found. (I would hate to come across as the guy that is telling people what to do). :)

Just FYI you guys. I've contacted Novelty and asked him to help out with one (and only one) collaborative expansion to get you guys going and to help transition. He hasn't said yes yet but he hasn't said no either. Hopefully he'll agree, but no promises.

Novelty deleted his fb account, so I don't know if he's off the grid or what.

I'd like to encourage everybody to resume the collaborative expansions, even if we can't get Novelty to be active here again. I've removed all the completed expansions from this forum, so everything that remains is incomplete. Keep in mind some of the incomplete expansions are actually still in progress, so consider the expansions that haven't seen any activity for a few months and suggest what we should work on as a group.

I've overlooked the whole 'Expansion Workshop' too and found out some interesting ideas. Maybe we can try one of them for collaborative exp.

I've 'uped' the threads:

  • The Relics - there is an idea of bonus tiles (like in H&G)
  • The Ruins - the idea is not so clear, but graphics is good and may inspire for smth else
  • Reconstruction - the idea is close to Bridges, but for city building
  • Sorcerers - don't know where the title came from, but the main idea is removal of already placed tiles (or maybe deactivation)

Bonus tiles sound good to me.
