Title: So where do the legalities stand on makeing/selling custom carc expansions?
Post by: jcardwell3rd on April 07, 2011, 09:04:47 am
I am not one to try to make tiles but i love some of the expansions you guys have created.

Are we not alowed to make/sell sets to one another? We are not remaking the regular or comertially available...

I am interested in purchasing some of these custom expansions as long as the backs are perfect matches to the original tiles. (i dont draw from bags, we play with stacks.

I recall a couple of discussions a while ago about this but couldn't remember where they were. A quick search came up with at least 2 topics you should probably read:
How Do You Make Your Own Tiles? (http://carcassonnecentral.com/forum/index.php?topic=89.0)  (scroll to the bottom of page 1 & top of page 2)
  Selling fan-made tiles (http://carcassonnecentral.com/forum/index.php?topic=851.0)

A lot depends on which country you're in & which country you're buying from, as in some countries it's considered ok as long as you're only charging for materials, labour & shipping whereas in other countries it would be illegal. It gets tricky if the images are original, but I think you'd probably be breaking the law if you were using images from the official games & expansions.

I would imagine it's completely illegal period.  You'd have to know everything the companies have trademarked and copywritten.  I can tell you in America, you'd get in trouble legally if caught.  And using any of the images from the game would be illegal.  So, I'd say selling is a big no-no.
