Think of your farmer's farm as a city, where the walls are city walls, roads, and the edges of the board (and the river, if you have that expansion). Just like a city, you may not place a follower in it if there is already another follower, of any colour, within its boundaries (again: city walls, roads, and the edge of the board). Also like a city, the only way to end up with more than one follower in a farm is to start off with followers in unconnected farms, then to join the farms together.
