Indeed, this does look promising. This years has been terrible for new Carcassonne expansions. Wheel of Fate hasn't even gotten a release date yet in the US and it has been three months since it released in Germany. Jay dodges the question every time. At least Fun Again Game and Thought Hammer are finally taking pre-orders. But then this comes around!

Tunnels! (Image of the expansion available at http://things-of-no-interest.blogspot.com/2009/09/tunnel-add-on-for-carcassonne.html (http://things-of-no-interest.blogspot.com/2009/09/tunnel-add-on-for-carcassonne.html)) Spielbox Issue 2009/6 (releases 21 October 21) is a four-tile expansion to Carcassonne. It also includes 12 chips in the six player colors. The announcement (and blog) were provided by a spielbox representative, so this is definitely legit. The pre-order scotty13 provided also works for US orders, I believe (I have not pre-ordered as of yet). No official rules have been provided by Spielbox but I assume they will be forthcoming.

Any speculations?

Man, this is tempting.  Almost $15 to ship to the U.S. though.  Not sure I can justify it.  I suppose I could wait for it to come to ebay or for Jay to put out his own (i.e. Siege).  Anxious to see what it looks like though.

Debating... F:)

I imagine that a the chits are used to claim a tunnel entrance and exit. When they are placed is the difficult part. Perhaps, if you deploy a thief to a road which ends in a tunnel, you also claim the tunnel entrance (and possibly exit) at that time. You score for the road in the usual way... but your road could continue right over the other side of the layout.

That's what i'm speculating, anyway ;)

Awesome. $15.15 including shipping to Canada.

If you're having trouble justifying, I'm expecting this will sell out and people will be selling for ridiculous amounts of money. This is the cheapest time to buy.

Also because it's a Spielbox expansion, Rio Grande most likely won't be able to make it available in North America.

The link provided should be in the English language (at least it was for me) but it is a German expansion from a German magazine, so I wouldn't expect to see it available from an English language source for a while, if ever, since there aren't any major English language board game magazines circulating right now (stupid Games Quarterly! You were crap, but you had cheap expansions).

The order page says October 21st is the release date, which suggests it will ship then or earlier. I ordered mine two nights ago. It wasn't too expensive, compared with the similar tile-count of Katharers. I somehow don't think Jay will bring this one to the US. Too few tiles to justify it.

Title: Re: New Spielbox Expansion
Post by: CKorfmann on October 13, 2009, 10:26:17 pm
It wouldn't surprise me.  He did so with Seige.  Perhaps it will be added to another Big Box some day.  I also wouldn't be surprised to see another Big Box with Wheel of Forture rather than the base game.

Title: Re: New Spielbox Expansion
Post by: Whaleyland on October 13, 2009, 10:47:27 pm
I agree. Perhaps a more aggressive Big Box 3 is in the future:

Wheel of Fate
Inns and Cathedrals
The Princess and the Dragon
The Tower
The Catapult
Tunnel (probably with some other small expansion)

We'll see.

Title: Re: New Spielbox Expansion

It would also be nice to see a Big Box that is a complete set!

Guys, it's a Spielbox expansion. The only way Jay could bring it to North America would be to completely redo the tile artwork and change the name of it.

Well, unless RGGHiG publishes it as a bigger expansion which gets republished by HiGRGG with extra tiles.

Edit: Ack, I got HiG and RGG confused :(

Which he did for Siege, so I think the precident has been set.

But it won't probably be "Tunnels".  It'll be a completely new expansion (or part of a new expansion) with different images and a similar set of rules (maybe with a few subtle differences).

Title: Re: New Spielbox Expansion
Post by: CKorfmann on October 15, 2009, 10:49:51 am
Here's my guess at the rules.  When you get one of these tiles, you place it normally and instead of placing a follower, you place the token of the appropriate color on one of the tunnels (or roads leading to it) and when you get a second on, you place it on the second tile as well and the two roads count as one.  Basically, it's the same idea as the King's Gate, but for roads.

That's my take on what I'm looking at.  Any other thoughts?

Title: Re: New Spielbox Expansion
Post by: Gwommy on October 15, 2009, 02:31:12 pm
That sounds like it would make sense, but I would think that you have to play both of the tokens at the same time instead of placing a follower.  And I'll bet that when you finish the road on both sides of the tunnel that you get your tokens back so you can place them again.  And I'd say that if someone shares your road, that they get to use your tunnel with your tokens.  And I'll also guess that you're not allowed to put your 2nd token on the same tile as your first token.  There's my guesses.

I emailed Jay about a possible RGG re-release, and the answer was quite exciting:

"As you probably know, the October Issue of Spielbox magazine is including an expansion for carcassonne, the tunnel. I was wanting to know, will RGG ever re-release this (like cathars/ siege), or would it be better to get it now through spielbox? Thanks.

Yes, I will release it next year. Jay"

Title: Re: New Spielbox Expansion
Post by: Gwommy on October 15, 2009, 04:49:23 pm
I suppose I can wait that long before getting them.  Besides, it'll probably take me a year to make all the tiles once I get them from Chr15lynn.

Title: Re: New Spielbox Expansion
Post by: henrysunset on October 15, 2009, 11:34:28 pm
When i foudn the high-resolution images fo the tiles and colored chits, I jumped the gun and started making a tuckbox for the expansion.

After writing up what I assumed to be the rules, I realized that I simply made them up, and I have no idea what the real rules will be.

My guess:
when you play a tile containing one or more tunnels, you draw a random tunnel marker and place them on the tunnels randomly.  The tunnel will continue on the tunnel of the matching color.  Since there are 11 tunnels and 12 chits, one tunnel will get lost in the mountains.  That road does not end.

Title: Re: New Spielbox Expansion

I'm only counting 10 tunnels. (http://gwommy.homestead.com/files/PurpleSmileConfused.gif)

Title: Re: New Spielbox Expansion
Post by: Whaleyland on October 16, 2009, 04:03:47 am
Me too.

Oh, and I think that the tunnels can be used to steal (or tie with) other people's roads. Basically, when you draw a tunnel, you can claim the other end (and the just placed end), which can hypothetically steal another player's road if they already have a thief on it. The fact that each player only gets 2 tokens, though, makes this a limited opportunity, which kind of stinks. It's very possible that nothing more than the little round marker is required to claim a tunnel (e.g., you don't need to place a follower a tunnel at all). I am very anxious to see the rules and for Matt to translated/analyze them. I hope they decided to stick watermarks on the tiles, though. The samples don't show any. A hexagon, like the Shrines Spielbox expansion would be acceptable to me. It will keep everything in the same family, that way. I doubt Jay will put any watermark on them if he has to draw his own version like Siege.

It's Spielbox's logo, I'm guessing all of Spielbox's expansions will continue to have that same logo:

Title: Re: New Spielbox Expansion
Post by: Whaleyland on October 21, 2009, 12:18:19 am
That's fine with me. I doubt Spielbox will make too many expansions, and none of them are ever that large. Having the same symbol on them all will make them kind of reminiscent of Count, King & Consort. Too bad they can't go back and add that symbol to the Cathars. Also too bad Rio Grande didn't add a watermark to CS&C.

Just to clarify, there have been no other Spielbox expansions besides Cathers, right?

Title: Re: New Spielbox Expansion

Just to clarify, there have been no other Spielbox expansions besides Cathers, right?

The Cult (Kultenstätten) was released by Spielbox (with the pentagon watermark) in 2008. It is identical to the CK&C version except it is slightly darker colored than most Carcassonne tiles and has the different watermark. Technically, it's its own expansion, even though it is a duplicate. That issue of Spielbox also included a mini-expansion for Stone Age.

Spielbox expansions:
Die Katharer (2004)
Die Kultenstätten (2008)
Der Tunnel (2009)

Throw in the Games Quarterly expansion and you have a full-sized compilation of 25 tiles (and 12 tokens).

Grrr!!! It's been almost three weeks now and no Tunnel! I feel like I'm trapped in a freaking tunnel. At this rate, I'll get my Wheel of Fortune and 1912 Europa expansions before I get this little expansion. .:.sigh.:.

Anyway, here's Jay's reply regarding the Tunnel's release in the US. Not too optimistic, really:

Quote
As for Tunnel, I will do it, but must wait a year - that is the rule
I must follow. As of now, I have no idea how I will do it, as it is too small to
be released on its own.

I seem to remember this one-year rule mentioned before. Somehow he got around it with The Cult, though, probably because HiG released it first and not Spielbox. Either way, he DOES plan to release it at least, so no Cathars-type availability issue. As I noted to him, he seems to have no idea how to release it. I'm guessing he's going to hope that a new mini expansion is released by HiG or Spielbox in the meantime, so he can compile them together. There really is nothing else that can be compiled at this moment in time. We'll just have to wait and see...for October 2010 at the earliest... .:.more sigh.:.  :-\

Edit: I just noticed that Hans im Glück's website now has a page for Der Tunnel expansion. It pretty much is a direct copy of the text in the magazine, but people can feel free to check it out. It's at http://www.hans-im-glueck.de/232.0.html (http://www.hans-im-glueck.de/232.0.html).

I entirely agree. I wish a publishing company in the US would print a translated version of Spielbox. I'd buy it and I'm sure hundreds if not thousands of other fans would too, especially if it included the bonus expansions. I'd even enjoy reading about the games that aren't yet (or not scheduled to be) released in the US.

Do you think the box should hold the chits as well?

Title: Re: New Spielbox Expansion
Post by: Whaleyland on November 20, 2009, 02:55:59 am
I think you should just make a really chitty box.  ;D

I also asked the guy who makes the BGG tuckboxes to make one for Der Tunnel. I also asked him to make one for the 19 Wheel tiles of the Wheel of Fortune expansion, but he was hesitant to commit to that saying that he didn't really agree with the expansion to begin with. He is considering making tuck boxes for both Wheel and the base game, however, but hasn't decided yet.

I can't decide if I would want the chits in the box with the tiles or not. I've thought about putting them in a small ziploc bag, but then where would the bag go? Or maybe a cylindrical box for the chits?

I always put my chits in the bags with their respective meeples.  At least for chits that go to players (as with catapult).  It works well for me.  I've got seperate bags for each color meeple set.

I'm in North America. If it takes more than two or three weeks, it probably got lost in the mail. Send an e-mail to Spielbox (reply to the last e-mail you got from them) and they'll send it again.

Hi

I don;t know if this is naughty or not, but I colour-corrected as best I could the image at  http://things-of-no-interest.blogspot.com/2009/09/tunnel-add-on-for-carcassonne.html)  (http://things-of-no-interest.blogspot.com/2009/09/tunnel-add-on-for-carcassonne.html)) because I didn't like the washed out green. Also added small tunnel watermark to tiles. If it's allowed and anyone's interested I can upload it.

The image looks nice. The actual tiles matched the rest of the tiles pretty closely and they already have a pentagon watermark (for Spielbox). However, for anyone who doesn't buy the expansion and just uses a print-and-play version, your tiles will work nicely. I like the watermark, too.

So for those who've gotten this expansion already, am I a fool to think I can just wait for RGG to release it sometime next year? Is this worth the money to order it from Germany to delivery in the States? (Or I guess I can take advantage of gunpowdertea's fine work above for now and then buy it later.)

I believe that Jay has said that he will be releasing it, but I don't think he gave us a timeline.
