Title: Carcassonne: By Order of the King
Post by: JPutt927 on August 02, 2009, 09:20:38 pm
Well, it's time to unleash my latest expansion, and it's a doozy. I can safely say, this was my most ambitious thus far. I have spent the past week, investing LOTS of time into this one...and I'm pretty darn excited about it. The file sizes are a bit larger than previous expansions, as it was the only way I could get it to look it's best. I hope everyone enjoys this as much as I do...

Here's the links...

And as always...a couple pictures.

Well, I will certainly look forward to being able to read this one.  If I'm correct by what I'm seeing (without being able to read it yet), this is a "deck of cards" expansion with each card containing a different tile formation.  Is that accurate?  I'm guessing there are no tiles in this one.  The cards look really nice!

Post by: JPutt927 on August 02, 2009, 10:16:51 pm
That is definitely an accurate assumption. It is indeed a "deck of cards" featuring a large assortment of different challenges for players to accomplish. There are 51 cards to go along with the original game and 5 cards per major expansion. There are a total of 88 cards. Thanks for the compliments!  :)

This one looks awesome. I already have a plan for making all the cards. I'll post a picture of them when I get them done!

Great idea, it adds a whole new dimension to the game! I think there will be much more followers in the city of Carcassonne, and a more fierce "battle" about the tokens because you often need to finish someone else's city/street for your assignment. Curious how a game with this expansion would look like :)

It's like Carcassonne meets Ticket to Ride! I love it! Too bad I hate printing out cards soo much. I printed and laminated the expansions for Starship Catan last summer. I've never played them because they look so awful! How do game publishers make the cards look so nice?

Edit: Could you make a .zip file for all the files in this expansion. Downloading 12ish files is taking forever. Thanks.

I did it. It was worth it. Can't wait to play with them  ;D

I know, the files are large. I'm sorry about that. I tried zipping the files...and unless I'm doing something wrong (I probably am)...the size didn't change at all. Any ideas?

And wow, Bubbasco!...you are on top of things! You certainly must have liked this idea!  ;D  Those look really freaking awesome. Did you print them yourself? And, are those laminated? Possibly card protectors? (I sized them with the intention of using card protectors...) I'm jealous, I haven't even made them yet!

Hi, I am not new here, but have been around some time. But now I really feel the need to respond. I am absolutely thrilled with this expansion. It looks fabolous en must be real fun to play with. Luckily I am on holiday now (schoolteacher), so I will make this soon.
JPutt927 Congrat with this expansion you overdid yourself (don't know if this is proper English, as that is not my motherlanguage). And thank you very much.

I have just re-visited this idea because I have just placed an order on ArtsCow for a custom fan-made expansion for Pandemic. Threat Level 6 is a set of 54 cards for adding to Pandemic. The reason I post here is that it is my first order from ArtsCow and new customers get their first deck free (you get something like 1200 free print credits. I still have some left to use after ordering my first deck). I only paid for shipping (£3.75 (after conversion from USD) to the UK). Lot's of BGG users get their fan made decks printed this way and testify to the quality of them.

I thought that the same could be done for By Order of the King. Although it would be 2 decks worth (each deck has 54 cards), it would make it really easy to obtain our decks, professionally printed. Once the decks have been created, the author can choose to share his design with others. This makes it really simple for others to place an order and receive a professional looking deck.

Check out the ArtsCow site here: http://www.artscow.com/?Ref=681794 (http://www.artscow.com/?Ref=681794): If you open an account with them using this link, I receive free credits that I can add to any future orders ;)

Me too, but due to the reorganization required to make my Monarch Wars draft readable, I probably will miss my opportunity to print my cards cheaply. Thanks for the link, though, because I may print By Order of the King and I can still use this site later...it will just cost me about $50 (although buying in bulk appears to save!).

I thought i'd give you a bit of an update on the ArtsCow deck that I ordered. Although this was a Pandemic! expansion, I thought it would be nice to show you some of the pics. The cards arrived 5 days after I placed my order (that's from Hong Kong to UK). The cards arrived in a padded envelope, which, when opened, was found to contain the cards in their own plastic card case. The cards were very well cut, nice rounded corners and the print was pretty good. All in all, i'm well pleased with how they turned out. I will definately be ordering from them again. In fact, I have a couple of projects that I have been working upon already. They are both entered in the 2009 Themed Rummy Contest hosted on BGG (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/438467 (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/438467)... if you like the ideas, don't forget the thumbs ;)  ;D)

These cards would be ideal for creating your own games (I am thinking of By Order of the King). Just need access to the artwork from JPutt927.

Anyway, here are the pics:

What's the current status of this? I don't recall seeing it on the fan-made customs page. Is it still a work-in-progress, or am I just going blind? I have to say this has me intrigued - I'd love to see how this plays.

I've been waiting for a long time for this expansion to get finished.  I don't know how I missed the links on the 1st post for the rules and cards.  So, I read through the rules and did some proofreading. Most things seem pretty straight forward.  Here's my suggested edits:

-"King's Order" is capitalized everywhere except in the "Extra Pieces" section.

=Fulfilling the King's Requirements
A player’s feature does not need to match the picture shown, as long as they still it meets the card’s requirements.

=Fulfillment clarifications
-For consistency with the paragraph titles, whenever you mention meeting the requirements on a card, it should something like "fulfilling the King's Order" instead of "completing a King's Order". The latter could get confused with completing a feature.

"In the examples on the left, the card states that the King’s Order will be complete fulfilled when a road connected to two complete cities (example 1), or a road connected to a city of at least 4 tiles (example 2) is completed."
? - The card implies that when 'you' complete the objective, which sounds like you have to be the one to play the last tile to complete the last uncompleted feature to meet the requirement.  The sentence in the rules does not mention anything who has to complete the features, so it sounds like as long as the features on the board, then you have fullfilled the King's Order.  Which is it supposed to be?

The majority of the tower site must be positioned within the city for it to be considered meet the requirements.

=Receiving additional cards
-In the first paragraph, there are many incidents where a single player is mentioned, then later in the sentence that player is referred with the words "they" or "their".  The references should be changed to "he/she" or "his/her".

If at any time a player is holding 3 or more cards that require placing scoring a farmer, that player may discard at least 2 of those cards at the beginning of their next turn.
-So you have to discard a minimum of 2 two cards?  Can all of the cards be discarded?

"A player must show these cards to the rest of the players at the time of the discard."
? - Does this mean that all the conflicting cards are shown to the other players or just the cards that are discarded?

=Final Scoring
The player who has completed the most King’s Order cards over the course of the game will receives 10 additional points.

=King's Order 3.pdf
Complete a road consisting of at least 3 tiles and a complete a city on each both ends

Nearly a year later... I've finally decided to try and get this expansion officially posted to the downloads section once and for all. I've made a few minor changes to the rules, and updated the link. In my opinion, it's good to go.

Also, I've created 10 new King's Order cards to coincide with both the Wheel of Fortune and the Bridges, Castles, and Bazaars Expansions.

Here are their links...

Wheel of Fortune - http://www.mediafire.com/?0inyeezzyu5
Bridges, Castles, and Bazaars - http://www.mediafire.com/?zzznwyi1lni

I hope you all enjoy this expansion, if you haven't already. It's time to get this site rollin' again! We need to pick up the activity.

I am currently interested in making a german version of "By Order of the King" because all the Carcassonne stuff I own so far is in german, that's why I really like to know which font you used on your 98 expansion-cards?

PS: I won't change the copyright and won't use the german cards for distribution, unless you like to distribute them by yourself.

The font used is called "Blackmoor LET". Feel free to translate it to German for your personal use. I appreciate you keeping the copyright as is.  :)

My little niece and I are addicted to Carcassonne. I am currently translating this expansion in Dutch for her (and me). Of course I will leave the copyright as it is. Credits to whom deserve the credits.
Thank you for this fantastic expansion.

In the meantime I finished my german version of "By Order of the King". I named it "Im Auftrag des Königs" and used another font than the original, but I think it fits quite good as well. The rules I didn't translate, that would be quite too much unnecessary work if you ask me.

And here's the link, feel free to use it!

(PS: you can only download the link 10 times, someone with more experience in uploading may upload it to a better server)

Has anyone ever converted this into a printable deck (via artscow or somewhere).  Thats a bit of a daunting task but would sure be great.  There seemed to be talk about it some time ago so I wanted to see what might have happened since.

Good idea, but it'd be at least 2 decks (I counted 98 cards), so that's at least $20 just for this expansion. So if this were to happen, we could make 10 more cards to get to 108 (54 per deck). Although, for myself, I was going to see if I can't get a friend to print them off since he designs and makes his own games.

From ArtsCow I would wait for a coupon offer and pick the expansion up for $2.99 a deck (inclusive of shipping!).

In the Crafter's Guild is a thread called 21 expansions (9 officials & 12 Fan-made) by JeRBer.  He has made a 54 card deck of By Order of the King and he also made the king, scout, etc...into cards.  They look good.  I'm fine with the King, scout, etc remaining tiles but the deck looked really good.

Any way that like 10 more cards for the various other expansions can be added to this set to bring the total up to 108 to get two print runs of card decks? Perhaps a few cards for River I, Crop Circles, Tunnel, Plague, and/or Siege/Cathars? That would make my second order of cards from ArtsCow so much more worth the money! Thanks JPutt927! Your expansions are awesome.

As an aside, right now through November there is a $2.99 custom card deck offer if you join the ArtsCow Facebook group. They give you a code which is quite nice. Free shipping too! All additional custom decks are $6.99.

I rather like the intro of cards with Order of the King, the idea is very much like the mechanic used in Ticket to Ride.

How well/balanced do the cards work in a real game situation?

We played our first game tonight of By Order of the King! It played very well and we really enjoyed it! It added some depth and purpose to the game. It mattered where you were placing cities, roads and cloisters and you were aware of various patterns on the board. It is a lot of fun!

Great job on this one JPutt927!!

Here's a question.  I have the Artscow account.  I got an e-mail for one of the specials where I can make a deck of cards with my own images on the front and back.  If I wanted to do this, what do I need to do?  How can I use the images and all of that?  I guess can somebody that has done this give me a quick "how to"?

Just printed out a set on cardstock. I'm going to use opaque sleeves for now and if they prove popular with my group i might have the artscow set printed up. I think it was a great idea.

One question though. Any thoughts on a set to cover forests and fishermen?

Artscow is having a 30% off sale right now. I used the artwork in JeRBer's album to prepare the following card sets:
http://www.artscow.com/gallery/playing-cards/by-order-of-the-king-deck-3w42z8jf7el8 (http://www.artscow.com/gallery/playing-cards/by-order-of-the-king-deck-3w42z8jf7el8)

These are standard US playing card size rather than 4"x6". Unfortunately because there is only 98 cards, I made the last 10 cards double-backed. You can toss them or do whatever you want.
