Title: Spell Checker?
Post by: CKorfmann on July 22, 2009, 10:15:39 pm
I'm anxiously waiting for the mysterious Member Downloads!  ;D

Oh, and in case you haven't noticed, I make a lot of typos...  Is there anyway we can get a spell checker?

I use Safari browser, which automatically spell checks what I type.

Don't most modern browsers have built-in spell checking? I know Firefox and Opera do. On a Mac, most anything can use the system-wide one. Can't speak for IE, but that sucks anyway  ;D

Wikipedia has quite a good list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_web_browsers#Browser_features

There is an option to enable spell-checking on the forums, but it only works on some servers and ours doesn't seem to be set up for it. Gantry would know more...

I use Firefox and when a word is misspelled it is automatically underlined in red.  You can then right click on the word and it will give you alternatives/options to choose from.
Voila.
Oh, and there's no need to use IE....as previously mentioned, it does in fact suck   ;D

They keep making new versions but somehow retain all the crappiness of the previous versions. Here's a thought: Why doesn't Microsoft try NOT imbedding their browser with their operating system? Perhaps things would actually work that way!

I use IE and I don't recall ever having trouble with it.  I can't say the same for Firefox.  It doesn't support some of the email forums I've tried to use.

That is exactly the way Safari spell checks.

I was using IE, but when IE8 was released, I downloaded it and then things went wrong, so I then changed to using Safari on a regular basis. I also have FireFox on my PC too.

There is a way to get a spell checker working for IE as well (bing it, haha), and since everyone else has it built in I don't think I'll be adding it.

A recent European Court ruling stated that Microsoft should not sell their operating system with an embedded browser, to leave buyers the opportunity to (quote) "download a browser of their choice".  So new computers would be sold with (for instance) Vista or Microsoft 7, but no embedded browser.

What the European court did not say, was how you are supposed to download a browser of your choice, without a browser to get on the internet in the first place!!! ???

Apple fan-boy and IE despiser I might be, but this EU ruling is just stupid.

ROFL.  Proper IRL LOL.
How true.

I don't care that it's included in my OS....I just choose to shun IE and not use it.

....but this EU ruling is just stupid.
True, and what did this court case cost?  Ridiculous.

EU sucks more than IE.

Inbuilt spell checkers suck even more. I absolutely abhor them and would never use them.
